- Two Cougar runs in the bottom of the sixth of the second game
gave the University of St. Francis a 2-1 victory to avoid a four-game
Forester sweep. HU took two from the Cougars on Thursday and won
game one on Saturday 5-4, but couldn't finish off St. Francis in the
final contest.
In the opener, the two
teams traded a pair of runs in the first inning, but the Cougars added
another run in the second. After both scored a run in the third,
St. Francis held a slim 4-3 advantage.
HU took its first lead of the game
with two runs in the fifth. Zach Crooks drew a leadoff walk and
Keith Benbow bunted for a hit to advance pinch runner Ryan Shell to
second. Austan Kas moved both runners up a base with a sacrifice
bunt, and then Korey Grow delivered a two-run single to right to give
the Foresters a 5-4 advantage. Drew Taylor then retired the
final nine batters in order to secure the win.
Taylor moved to 7-2 on the season
with another complete game victory. He allowed four runs on
seven hits and one walk while striking out two. Kas had two hits
in the contest and Grow and Alex Rinearson both had two RBI.
Game two was scoreless heading into
the sixth inning. Rinearson broke the tie when he sent the first
pitch of the inning over the right field fence. In the bottom of
the frame, the Cougars took advantage of a double and two throwing
errors to plate two runs. In the top of the seventh, the
Foresters got a runner on and brought the winning run to the plate,
but an infield double play ended the rally attempt.
Eric Randel held the Cougars to three
hits, but couldn't come up with the victory. He also struck out
two and walked one in his seven innings of work. Adam Farris,
Adam Culy and Shell each had two hits in the game.
"We were fortunate to come away from today with a split," said
Coach Frame. "We were extremely poor in the whole four game
series with St Francis. You have to give credit to their pitchers.
They were just better than our hitters. We misplayed back to back
sacrifice bunts in the sixth of the second game and that cost us. I am
very disappointed in the day."
