- The Foresters opened Mid-Central Conference play by taking a
doubleheader from Grace College with 11-1 and 5-4 victories. The
two wins put HU above the .500 mark on the season with a 7-6 record
overall.
Eric Randel (2-1)
pitched a three-hitter in the opener and got lots of help from the
Forester offense to get the easy win. He gave up just one
unearned run and struck out two in the shortened five inning game.
HU got all the runs it would need
with three in the first and then slammed the door with six more in the
second. The Lancers pushed one across in the third, but two more
by the Foresters in the fifth brought the game to an early conclusion.
At the plate, Austan Kas had three
hits, including two doubles, and he scored three runs and drove in two
for HU. Thad Frame also tallied three hits in the game, scored
two runs and had one RBI and Adam Farris led the Foresters with three
RBI.
The nightcap was a seesaw affair.
HU struck first with a run in their first at-bat. Grace evened
things up with one in the top of the third. The Foresters seemed
to take control in the fifth on a three-run double by Edwin Rodriguez,
but the Lancers again knotted the score with three in the top of the
sixth. Neither team could put anything together in the seventh,
so they went to extra innings.
Korey Grow, who came on in relief in
the seventh for HU, retired Grace in order in the eighth. Kas
then got things started in the bottom of the eighth with a leadoff
double. Frame then bunted for a hit and moved Kas to third on the
play. After Grow grounded out, Alex Rinearson singled to the gap
in right-center to drive in the game-winner.
Grow (1-1) not only earned the win
after pitching two scoreless innings and striking out two, he also led
the Foresters with three hits in the game. Rodriguez took-game-high
honors with his three RBI.
