- The Foresters kept their chances alive for a MCC conference
title with two wins, 12-2 and 5-3, over Bethel College, but winning
the title would require some help. HU (25-11, 20-5) must take
care of busy in their final doubleheader with Bethel and then hope
that Marian College can take two from Spring Arbor in their final two
contests. In that scenario, the Foresters and Spring Arbor would
be tied, but HU beat the Cougars two out of three, which would give
the Foresters the title.
In their first game at Bethel, the
Foresters quickly took control of the game with seven runs through the
first two innings of play. The Pilots scored their only two runs
of the game in the bottom of the third. HU effectively put the
game out of reach with five more scores over the final two innings for
the 12-2 victory.
Michael Dalton threw six innings to
earn his sixth win of the season. He allowed two runs on eight
hits and three walks while striking out four. Thad Frame led the
Foresters with a 3-5 performance at the plate and he also tallied four
RBI in the game. Alex Rinearson registered his fifth homerun of
the season, a two-run shot in the second.
In the nightcap, HU fell behind 3-0
to Bethel in the first inning. The Foresters got one back in the
top of the second and Rinearson belted his second longball of the day
to make it 3-2 in the third. In the top of the fifth, HU tied
the game when Korey Grow hit a sacrifice fly and then took the lead on
a bases-loaded infield single from Andrew Drummond. The
Foresters added an insurance run in the seventh on a two-out single,
again by Drummond.
After giving up three early runs, HU
hurler Drew Taylor settled down and held the Pilots scoreless over the
final six innings to move to 5-3 on the season. He allowed just
five hits and he struck out five. Rinearson and Drummond both
had two hits for the Foresters.
