- In their opening game of the NAIA Region VIII Tournament, the Foresters
(31-12) made the most of their opportunity to play in the friendly
confines of Forest Glen Park with four long balls that led to a
convincing 12-3 win over Indiana Institute of Technology.
Edwin Rodriguez got the parade
started with a solo shot in the second and added another in the third,
giving HU a 4-2 lead it would not relinquish. With two runs
already across in the sixth, Thad Frame blew the game open with a
three-run dinger over the left field fence to make it 9-3. Andrew
Drummond joined in on the fun with another solo round-tripper in the
seventh. A run in both the eighth and ninth innings were the
finishing touches on a soggy victory to put HU in the winner's
bracket.
The Foresters touched Indiana Tech
pitchers for 17 hits in the contest. HU's Frame took game-high
honors with four hits and five RBI. Teammates Austan Kas, Adam Farris
and Rodriguez each chipped in three hits.
On the mound for the Foresters, Drew
Taylor dominated the Indiana Tech hitters from start to finish.
He allowed three runs, of which only one was earned, and he struck out
eight batters in nine innings of work to earn the complete-game
victory.
Game two of the tournament, which
pitted Madonna University against Spring Arbor University was
postponed to Thursday, May 8 at 1:00 p.m. Indiana Tech will face
the losers of game two Thursday 4:00 p.m. The Foresters will
take on the winner of game two on Friday at a time yet to be
determined.
