The Foresters are making a statement early in the MCC season by
knocking off NAIA 9th-ranked Spring Arbor University twice on the
road 8-5 and 11-5 after splitting with them at home two days
earlier.
Edwin Rodriguez
continued to swing a hot bat for HU and gave the Foresters the early
lead with a two-run homerun in the top of the first. Spring Arbor
answered with three in the bottom of the second, but the Foresters
retaliated with four in the fourth. They put together two singles
and two doubles with two outs in the inning to retake the lead for
good. HU tacked on a pair of insurance runs in the sixth and
then stymied the Cougars' rally attempt in the seventh to claim the
8-5 victory.
Forester pitcher
Drew Taylor earned his third win of the week on the mound. He
threw all seven innings and allowed five runs, four earned, on 10
hits and three walks while striking out two. Ryan Shell,
Andrew Drummond and Eric Harpring each had two hits including a
double in the game to lead HU at the plate. Rodriguez had a
team-high two RBI.
In the second game,
the Foresters again jumped in front early. They manufactured a run
in the top of the second and then for the second time on the day,
Rodriguez drilled a long ball to center, this time a three-run shot
to give HU a 4-0 lead.
In the top of the
sixth, the Foresters drove Spring Arbor starter Andy Paulun from the
mound after scoring a run and then peppered his replacement, Jeff
Tervo, with four more hits and five runs to take command of the game
at 10-0. The Cougars avoided an early dismissal from the
contest by scoring four runs in the bottom of the sixth, but
eventually succumbed 11-5 in the seventh.
Mitch Bowers
recorded the complete-game win for HU. He allowed five runs on
seven hits and two walks while striking out seven. Justin
Branock, Drummond and Harpring each tallied three hits in the game
and Rodriguez again led the Foresters with three RBI.
With the sweep, HU improves to 12-9 on the season and 5-1 in the MCC. |
