- Heading into the third and final round of play at the NAIA Region
VIII tournament, the Foresters were in fifth place, but just 10
strokes out of second. Unfortunately, HU carded a 322 for the
last 18 holes and dropped to sixth in the final standings with a score
of 961. Marian won the tournament with a 921 followed by Indiana
Wesleyan (929), Bethel (936), Aquinas (957), Cornerstone (958), HU
(961), Davenport (965) and Spring Arbor (972).
"This was a
roller-coaster tournament for us," said Coach Schownir. "We
played poorly Friday morning and then had the third best score in the
afternoon. Our goal was to place fourth, but could not get anything
going Saturday. Rock Hollow is such a demanding course mentally that
you can be playing fairly well and still run into trouble."
In his final
competition for the Foresters, senior Andrew Porterfield
tied for 13th
in the individual standings with a three-round total of 238 (81, 78,
79). Senior Wes Knuth was right behind him with a 239 (81, 76,
82). Spencer Batt shot a 242 (79, 80, 83). Justin Imel had
a 243 (85, 80, 78) and Dan Knuth finished with a 249 (85, 79, 85).
"This was the last
tournament for senior tri-captains Andrew Porterfield, Dan & Wes
Knuth," said Schownir. "Andrew is Huntington's most successful
golfer in 15 years and Dan and Wes did a great job this spring trying
to balance student teaching in Decatur and playing in tournaments. All
three of them will be nominated to be NAIA Academic All-Americans,
which is a tremendous honor."
Side notes: Andy Varner of Indiana Wesleyan earned medalist and NAIA
Region VIII Player of the Year honors and will join Marian College at
the NAIA National Championship May 16-19 in Olathe, KS. The NAIA
awarded Swan Lake Resort in Plymouth, IN as host of the 2007 and 2008
National Championship. |
