It was a landmark day for a young Forester squad that posted the
program's first win since the early 90's and the lowest team score in
at least a decade. Led by senior
Andrew Porterfield's medalist round of three-under par 69, three
freshmen contributed scores in the 70's to give Huntington a winning
team total of 296, breaking the 300 barrier that has eluded the
Foresters for so long. In his first collegiate tournament, HU
freshman Ryan Bonner took second place in the match by posting a 74
and classmate Daniel Schroeder was third with his 76. Lee
Taylor, also representing the Foresters for the first time, finished
with a 77 to complete HU's scoring. Freshman Justin Imel also
shot in the 70's with a 79 in his first outing and sophomore Patrick
Davis added an 81.
"Ryan and Lee played superbly in their
first collegiate tournament and Daniel bounced back from a rough
weekend with a quality performance," said an elated Coach Schownir.
"This group of freshmen is just great with their desire, their work
ethic, and they get along so well. I couldn't be more pleased.
It was also great to see Andrew record a career low with his 69."
Following HU in the standings were
Indiana Wesleyan (319), Taylor (320), St. Francis (324), Grace (325),
and Goshen (369). The win moves the Foresters to 6-9 on the
season. |
