Despite not playing their best golf, the Foresters came up with
several saves on critical holes to earn an uncommon back-to-back win
at the Grace College Invitational. "I am happy that we won our second
tournament in a row," said Coach Schownir. "Stonehenge, which was the
site of this summer's Indiana Open, is a tough course, and all of our
freshmen were playing it for the first time." Huntington won
with a 321 team score with St. Francis second at 323. Taylor was
third with a 327 and Grace finished fourth at 339.
Andrew Porterfield took top honors in the
field again with a 77. Justin Imel and Daniel Schroeder both
shot an 81 and Ryan Bonner finished with an 82 to complete the scoring
for HU. With just a two-stroke margin of victory, every save
became monumental. Imel got up and down six out of eight times
to save par on the front nine. Bonner double-bogeyed each of his
first four holes, but then played the rest of the way only three over,
and Schroeder hit his tee shot on #9 out of bounds, then chipped in
for a three on his second ball to save par.
"We didn't play our best today, but we
still managed to get the job done. These guys don't give up even when
they don't have their 'A' game." The win moves the Foresters to 9-9 on
the season. |
