It was a clash between two
NAIA Division II Top Ten teams and the 8th-ranked Warriors of Indiana Tech
were cruising with a 16-point lead over the 3rd-ranked Foresters four
minutes into the second half. Desperate to try to throw off the
Warriors' rhythm, Coach Platt changed defenses and went to a 2-3 zone.
The ploy worked as the Warriors got tight from the perimeter, which allowed
HC to claw its way back into the game. The Foresters took a 79-77 lead
on a Kyle Ganton layup with a little over a minute left to play.
Tech's Kendrick Cornelius hit one of two free throws on the Warrior's next
possession to make it 79-78. The Foresters then made just two of seven
free throw attempts over the next 44 seconds to hold an 81-78 lead with 1.8
seconds left. Detonio Hawkins' layup at the buzzer wasn't enough as the
Foresters survived 81-80. HC's zone defense in the second half held
the Warriors to 39% shooting (12-31) while the Foresters went 16-26 from the
field for 62% in the half. With HC packing it in, Tech was forced to
look outside for shots, but went just 1-14 beyond the arc. Four
Foresters scored in double figures with Ganton scoring a team-high 23
points. Steve Snider added 19 points and eight rebounds. Alex
Kock had a double-double with 12 points and a game-high 14 rebounds, and
Chase Verba added 10 points. JuJuan Cooley led the Warriors with 23.
The win moves the Foresters to 3-2 on the season.
