- There was no rest for the weary. After knocking off the NAIA
Division II 8th-ranked Indiana Tech Warriors on Tuesday night on the road,
the 3rd-ranked Foresters hosted the NAIA Division I 20th-ranked
Cougars of St. Xavier 24 hours later and won the seesaw battle 72-68 in
overtime. The game saw 21 lead changes and 12 ties with HC owning the
biggest lead of the game at 11-4 early in the contest. With 35 seconds
left in regulation, Adam Bontreger put the Foresters up 65-63 by hitting one
of two free throws. The Cougars then used a high pick to give point
guard Phillip Watson a step on his drive to the hoop for the game-tying layup
with :15 left on the clock. Alex Kock's jumper from the left wing
bounced off the rim as time expired forcing the extra period. With HC
playing in their third game in five days and the Cougars playing in their
fourth in five days, the overtime became more about who had the freshest
legs. St. Xavier took the tip and Jason Reiter hit a jumper at the
elbow to give the Cougars the lead. After trading misses, HC's Steve
Snider was fouled on a drive to the hoop and hit both charity tosses to knot
the score at 67. On the Cougars next possession, Jabari Saunders hit
one of two from the line to put St Xavier up 68-67 with 2:48 left. With
both teams leaving shot attempts short, Coach Platt decided to insert some
fresh legs into the lineup. Jared Yoder, playing in just his second game this
season, answered the call. After trading two more missed field goals,
the Foresters finally got the ball moving around the perimeter against the
Cougar zone and found Yoder open in the left corner. Yoder knocked down
the trey to put HC back in the lead at 70-68 with :49 on the clock.
After a St. Xavier turnover, the Cougars fouled Yoder who hit one of two to
give HC a 71-68 lead. Another missed jumper and a foul put Snider at
the line with six seconds to play. He hit the second free throw to put
the game out of reach. Snider led all scorers in the game with 20
points, and Alex Kock added 12 points and 8 rebounds. Mike Rojas and
Saunders each had 13 to lead St. Xavier. The win moves the men to 4-2 on
the season.
