11.6.04 - The Foresters gave the Valparaiso University Crusaders a battle, but ultimately came up short 73-69 in an exhibition game against the NCAA Division I opponent.  Although the Foresters led most of the game, it was the Crusaders who came up with the big plays down the stretch to give them the victory.  With 1:35 left on the clock, Valpo’s Kenny Harris hit a short jumper to knot the score at 66.   On HC's next possession, Crusader Jimmie Miles stole the ball and drove the length of the court for the go-ahead lay-up with 1:14 remaining. Alex Kock, who led the Foresters with 19 points and 11 rebounds, answered with a 3-pointer with 40 seconds to give HC the one-point advantage at 69-68.  On Valpo’s next possession, Dan Oppland hit a running jumper with :20 showing on the clock to put the Crusaders back in the lead.  Valpo’s Ali Berdiel then stripped the ball from HC’s Adam Bontreger and made one of two free throws.  Berdiel rebounded his miss and fed the ball to Oppland who was fouled with three seconds left. The Crusader junior then put the game out of reach by sinking both free throws.  For the game, Valpo’s Oppland led all scorers with 23 points and had nine rebounds. For HC, Doug Sheckler tallied 15 points and Snider added 14. The Foresters out-shot the Crusaders making 44% of their shot attempts (24-254), while Valpo hit 42 percent (24-57). The Crusaders outrebounded Huntington 36-33.
