The NAIA 9th-ranked Foresters survived a scare by the
Grace College Lancers with their 77-72 come-from-behind win at the
Merillat Complex. The Lancers took advantage of a slow start by HC
and built a 23-13 lead midway through the first half, but from there
the Foresters outscored Grace 15-6 and headed to the locker room
down just one at 29-28. For the first nine minutes of the second
half, it was all Lancers as they stretched their half-time lead to
57-45 with 8:44 left to play. Huntington needed something to change
the momentum and a full court press did the trick. The Foresters
forced Grace into three turnovers and a few quick shots and
completed the comeback at 63-63 on a layup by Jared Yoder. The
Lancers missed two more field goal attempts while Alex Kock finished
an old-fashioned three-point play and added another jumper to put
the Foresters up five at 68-63 before Grace’s Joe Saunders stopped
the run with a layup in the paint. A tip-in by Adam Bontreger put
Huntington up 73-67 with just under a minute to play and the
Foresters hit four of six free throws down the stretch to hold off
the Lancers. Doug Sheckler came off the bench to lead four
Foresters in double figures with 19 points. Kock added 18, Ganton
chipped in 13 and Steve Snider finished 12. Andrew Kipsey led Grace
with his 19 points.
The win moves the
Foresters to 17-8 on the season and 9-3 in the MCC.
