It was a typical Huntington University vs.
Bethel College fast-paced, physical, conference match-up, but HU's
experience proved too much for the young Pilot squad as Huntington
(17-4, 6-2) defeated Bethel (8-12, 0-7) 83-68.
The first half of play was what the crowd
expected with both teams exerting full force, aggressive play at both
ends of the court. Alex Kock opened the game with a deep 3-pointer
giving the Foresters the early lead, but the Pilots kept it close
throughout much of the first half. A rebound bucket by Bethel's
Kory Lantz had the Pilots still within three at 28-25 with 4:43 to go
in the period, but HU closed out the half with a 16-9 run to give the
Foresters a 44-34 lead at intermission.
After a slow start to the second half,
HU gradually began to put the game out of reach. Two pairs of
back-to-back threes HU's Kyle Benge and Kock pushed the Foresters'
lead to 15 at the 13:21 mark and six minutes later, two consecutive
treys from HU's Kyle Ganton gave the Foresters a 68-50 advantage with
7:45 to go. The Pilots got back within 14 with just under a
minute to play, but time ran out on the rally attempt.
Three Foresters scored in double digits
in the game. Ganton topped all scorers with his 26 points and
five rebounds. Kock supplied a double-double with 20 points and 10
boards, and Benge added 15 off the bench. Bethel was led by Kyle
Sears' 20 points. Ted Lawver added 14 points and nine rebounds.
HU shot 50% from the field while
the Pilots shot 43%, and the Foresters won the battle of the boards
40-29.
