- Good teams find a way to win and different individuals have stepped up for
the Foresters at critical times this season. This time it was
Jared Yoder knocking down a three with 19 seconds left to put HU in
front of the Grace College Lancers 85-84, and then the defense made it
stick. With
2:17 left in the game, Grace's Eric Gaff scored on a putback to give
the Lancers an 84-80 lead. After trading misses from behind the
arc, Forester Chase Verba scored and was fouled at the 1:05 mark.
Verba missed the free throw and Gaff grabbed the rebound with the
Lancers up 84-82. Marcus Moore's 3-point attempt on Grace's next
possession was off the mark and Verba came down with the rebound for
HU. The Foresters pushed it up the floor and Doug Sheckler found
Yoder who buried the trey and gave HU the 85-84 lead with 19 seconds
to play. Grace's Dave Richmond drove the lane looking for a
shot, but the Forester defense clogged the middle and forced Richmond
to shoot a pull-up over the defense. Sheckler grabbed the miss
and was fouled with four seconds left. Sheckler missed both
charity tosses giving the Lancers one final ray of hope, but Austin
Kaiser's running 40 footer at the buzzer was off the mark.
The game was close
from start to finish as neither team owned more than a seven-point
advantage. Both teams had the range in the first half with each
shooting 59%, but in the second period, HU cooled to 44% and the
Lancers dropped to 50%. The Foresters were aided in the victory
by a 38-30 advantage on the boards and they went 12-17 from the line
compared to 4-7 for the Lancers.
Both teams put four players in double
figures in the game. Grace's Marcus Moore took game-high honors
with 25. Gaff added a double-double with 20 points on 10-11
shooting and 11 rebounds. Richmond finished with 15 and Michael
Wienhorst had 12. Kyle Ganton paced HU with 23 points and nine
boards. Yoder chipped in a season-high 16 points. Kyle
Benge had 12 points off the bench and Alex Kock added 11 points and
nine rebounds. With the win, the men improve to 22-4 on the
season and 10-2 in the conference.
