- It's not a trend a coach likes to see. For the second game in a row,
the Foresters built a commanding first half lead and then had to hang
on to get the win. This time HU had to weather a 61-point second
half rally by the Goshen College Maple Leafs to earn the 98-95 victory
on the road. Through the first 15
minutes of the contest, the Maple Leafs stayed within striking
distance and were only down five at 37-32 with 5:32 left in the half.
HU then turned up the defensive intensity and gave themselves some
breathing room with a 16-2 run to close out the half. The
Foresters 53-34 halftime lead was the largest of the game.
Goshen emerged from the locker room and
immediately began to chip away at the deficit. By the 17:44
mark, the Leafs got it down to 11 at 55-44 on a bomb from Brice
Hartman. HU answered with a 5-0 run to push it back to a
16-point lead. Goshen pulled within 11 two more times and
finally reached single digits at 77-68 on an Eric Walsh layup with
8:19 to go. The Foresters again responded to the Goshen run with
a 6-0 spurt to make it 83-68 with 6:04 remaining, but the Leafs were
still not done. With one final push, the Leafs got within three
on a trey by Tyler Sheerer at 96-93 with 21 seconds left, but HU's
Doug Sheckler sank two charity tosses to put the game out of reach.
A Jordan Buller layup at the buzzer made the Foresters' final margin
or victory 98-95.
HU got big offensive games from Alex
Kock, Doug Sheckler and Kyle Ganton. Kock led all scorers in the
game with 27 points. Sheckler added 24 and Ganton had 23.
Kock and Ganton each grabbed a team-high eight rebounds in the game as
well. Six Maple Leafs reached double figures with Walsh leading
the way with 25 points. The Foresters scorched the nets shooting
58% from the field, including 56% from downtown. They also went
15-19 from the line for 79%. Goshen was 34-65 from the field for
52% shooting. The win gives the Foresters a 16-3 record overall
and a 5-1 mark in the MCC.
