- After trailing by four at the break, the Foresters rallied to take a
10-point lead midway through the second half and looked to be in
control with an 11-point advantage with just over three minutes to
play. But things began to spiral out of control as the Saints
closed out the game with a 13-1 run to hand HU its first loss of the
season 76-75.
Jared Yoder hit the first of two free throws to give the Foresters
their largest lead of the game at 74-63 with 3:18 to play. Siena
Heights' Olajuwon Pinson scored to cut the lead to nine and Perry
Gilbert added a bucket following an Alex Kock miss to trim the lead to
seven. Kock hit one of two free throws on HU's next possession, but
Daniel Yatzek answered with a field goal to bring the Saints within
six at 75-69. The Foresters then committed four consecutive
turnovers, and Siena Heights capitalized on the gifts to pull within
one at 75-74 with :33 on the clock. HU had two chances to push
the lead back to three, but Kock and Steve Snider's attempts were both
off the mark and Gilbert came up with the defensive rebound, setting
the stage for Brian Biggs to steal the win with his buzzer-beating
jumper.
The Foresters were
led by Kock's double-double with 24 points and 12 rebounds. Kyle
Ganton finished with 15 points and seven rebounds, and Snider added 13
points and seven boards. Gilbert paced the Saints with 17
points, eight rebounds and three steals and Biggs added 16 points and
three steals. Kock and Ganton were both named to the
All-Tournament team and joined Gilbert, the MVP, and Biggs from Siena
Heights, Brian Montanaro from Daemen and Javon Anderson from Marygrove.
In Friday evening's
game, HU routed the Wildcats of Daemen College 87-69. Daemen
kept pace with the Foresters for the first seven minutes of the game,
but a 25-6 run midway through the half, gave HU a commanding lead and
a 53-37 advantage at intermission. Daemen got within 14 at 67-53
eight minutes into the second half, but a 10-4 Forester run over the
next four minutes ended the threat and HU cruised to the 87-69 win.
Kock led all
scorers in the game with 27 points on 11-18 shooting, including 5-10
from downtown. He also grabbed a game-high 10 rebounds to record
his first double-double of the season. Three other Foresters
joined Kock in double figures with Ganton scoring 20 on 7-10 shooting,
Snider adding 13 and Kyle Benge finishing with 12 off the bench.
HU shot 57% (33-58) for the game while the Wildcats were at 44%
(26-50). Daemen out-rebounded the Foresters 34-29.
