- In the championship
game of the Huntington University/Ness Bros. Hall of Fame Classic, two
NAIA powerhouses squared off to do battle. The Division II
7th-ranked HU Foresters (6-1) claimed the
tournament title with a convincing 95-71 victory over the NAIA
Division I 5th-ranked Georgetown College Tigers (7-2). The
two heavyweights danced to an 8-8 tie over the first five minutes as
each tried to get a feel for the other's game. A jumper by Doug
Sheckler gave HU a 10-8 lead and ignited an 18-4 over the next six
minutes, giving the Foresters a 26-12 advantage. Huntington's
defense frustrated the Tigers throughout the half and allowed the
Foresters to take a 47-31 lead to the locker room at the break.
Georgetown picked up
the intensity level to open the second half and cut their deficit to
single digits at 49-40 just two minutes into the period.
Following a HU timeout, the Foresters put together a 21-10 run to push
their lead back to 20 at 70-50 at the 12:28 mark. Tournament
MVP, Kyle Ganton knocked down eight of his game-high 26 during the
stretch. Two free throws by Georgetown's Mark Surgalski pulled
the Tigers to within 16 at 77-61
with
8:29 left to play, but they could get no closer.
Joining
Ganton in double figures for HU was Sheckler with 18 off the
bench, Steve Snider who contributed 17 points and 8 rebounds, and Alex
Kock who tossed in 16. Georgetown was lead by Brian Silverhorn with
18 points and 3 assists. Others named to the All-Tournament team were
Snider and Sheckler from Huntington, Silverhorn and Orlandus Hill of
Georgetown and Haze Massey of Ohio Dominican.
In Friday night action, the Foresters jumped out to an 11-0 lead over
Lincoln Christian College and never looked back. HU blistered
the nets at 68% in the first half to take the Preachers out of the
game early. The Foresters held a 63-15 lead at the break and
finished with the 93-45 win to move on to the Championship game on
Saturday against the NAIA Division I 5th-ranked Georgetown College
Tigers.
