- The NAIA 7th-ranked Foresters survived a scare on the road with an 84-76
win over the University of St. Francis. The Foresters jumped out to an
early 10-4 lead three minutes into the game, but St. Francis took
advantage of several HU turnovers to work their way back into a 24-19
lead midway through the half. The Cougars increased their lead
to nine at 34-25 on a 3-pointer from Mike Steinau and still held a
42-37 advantage at intermission.
The second half was marked by
lead-swinging runs by both teams. The Foresters emerged from the
locker room and turned a 47-43 deficit into a 55-47 lead with the use
of the long ball. Alex Kock and Jared Yoder each hit two from
downtown to give the Foresters their largest lead of the game with
13:38 left to play. The Cougars came right back with a 13-4 run
to take back the lead at 62-59 with 8:34 on the clock. HU
reclaimed the lead for good at 67-65 on a jumper in the paint by Kyle
Ganton with just over six minutes to go. St. Francis continued
to hang around and was still within two at 78-76 with :30 remaining,
but Ganton went 6-6 from the charity stripe in the final 30 seconds to
secure the victory.
HU's Ganton and
Kock shared game-high honors with 20 points apiece. Chase Verba
added 14 points and seven rebounds and Yoder finished with 12 points.
Mike Campbell came off the bench to lead the Cougars with 12 points
and 16 rebounds. With the win the Foresters improve to 9-2 on
the season and remain unbeaten at 2-0 in conference play.
