- You can live or die by the three, and this time, the 7th-ranked Foresters
couldn't find the range as they fell 79-69 to the NAIA 22nd-ranked
Trojans of Taylor University. HU entered the game shooting 40%
from downtown, but the stingy Taylor defense held the Foresters to 18%
on 3 of 17 shooting. Inside the arc, HU went 19-30 for 63%.
Both teams struggled
offensively early with the Trojans finally getting on the board five
minutes into the contest on a putback by Eric Ford. A
Jacob Bream jumper gave Taylor a five-point lead at 12-7 with 11:25 to
play in the half, but the Foresters ran off seven unanswered points
over the next two minutes to take a 14-12 lead. Two free throws
from Kyle Benge put the Foresters up 18-17 with 6:35 remaining, but it
would be their last lead of the game. The Trojans finished the half
with a 13-6 run to take a 30-24 lead at the break.
Taylor pushed its
advantage to nine early in the second half and was still up 45-36 with
12:10 on the clock. Over the next three minutes, HU rallied to
tie it at 46 apiece with 9:15 to go. After Taylor's Ford and
HU's Steve Snider traded free throws, the Trojans put together two
treys, an old-fashioned 3-point play and two charity tosses to take a
59-50 lead with six minutes to play. The Foresters cut it to six
on a 3-point play by Doug Sheckler, but they could get no closer the
rest of the way.
Taylor's Ford led
all scorers in the game with 32 points on 10-20 shooting, including
5-9 from 3-point range and 7-8 from the line. Doug Bell added 16
points and eight rebounds and R. J. Beucler finished with 10.
Alex Kock paced the Foresters with 22 points. Sheckler had 16
points, and Kyle Benge and Ganton each added 11. The loss drops
the Foresters to 9-3 on the season and 2-1 in the MCC.
