The Foresters spent the first half trying to keep pace with Grace
College, then used some stifling defense to mount a comeback and
finish going away with the 80-62 win over the Lancers. Early in
the game, HU held a slim two point lead on three occasions with the
last at 10-8 at the 14:36 mark. Grace answered with a 3-pointer
by Dave Richmond to regain the lead and eventually pushed it to six at
21-15 on a trey by Marcus Moore with 9:13 to play. The Foresters
fought back and tied it at 28-28 with three minutes to play, but the
Lancers closed out the half with a 10-5 run and took a five-point lead
at 38-33 heading into halftime.
The Lancers exploded out of the locker room with seven unanswered
points to take a 45-33 lead two minutes into the half. HU
regrouped in a timeout and stormed back into the game. A 17-4
run gave the Foresters their first lead of the half at 50-49 with
12:01 on the clock. The two teams battled for the lead over the
next several minutes, but it was finally an Alex Kock jumper that
ignited a HU 12-1 run to give the Foresters the lead for good. A
Lancer layup by Michael Wienhorst cut HU's lead to 71-62 with 1:54
remaining, but it would be Grace's final bucket of the game. The
Foresters then sealed the win from the line going 6-6 down the
stretch.
After allowing
Grace to shoot 56% from the floor in the first half, the Foresters
held the Lancers to 33% shooting in the second. HU also owned a
huge advantage on the boards at 42-30, including a 17-7 margin on the
offensive end. Two Foresters came up with double-doubles in the
game. Kyle Ganton scored a team-high 17 points and grabbed 12
rebounds, and Alex Kock dropped in 16 points and pulled down 14
rebounds. HU also got 12 points off the bench from Ty Riddle. Grace
was led by Marcus Moore with 26 points. With the win, the
#7-ranked Foresters improve to 10-3 on the season and 3-1 in
conference play.
