- After suffering a disappointing loss on
Saturday, the NAIA #2-rnaked Huntington University Foresters (23-5,
11-3) got back to their winning ways with a 76-64 victory over the
Goshen College Maple Leafs (13-14, 5-9). Goshen struggled from the
field early and the Foresters capitalized with a 16-4 run over the
first eight minutes of the game. The Maple Leafs got back within
seven at 23-16 on a 3-pointer by Brice Hartman with just under seven
minutes left in the half, but Huntington pushed it back to ten at
32-22 at the break. The second
half was marked with several runs by both teams. Huntington’s Alex
Kock scored a layup to start the second half, but Goshen responded
with five unanswered points to cut it to 34-27. The Foresters then
pieced together a 14-7 run over the next five minutes to get their
lead back to double digits at 48-34. Goshen answered with an 11-5
spurt to trim the deficit back to eight at 53-45 with 11:25 to go.
The seesaw battle continued as Huntington put the screws to the Maple
Leafs with a devastating 15-2 run, giving the Foresters their largest
lead of the game at 68-47 with just under nine minutes to go. A layup
by Eric Walsh got Goshen back within 11 at the 3:43 mark, but they
could get no closer down the stretch.
The Foresters were led by Kyle Ganton’s 25 points. Kock added 20
points and Doug Sheckler finished with a double-double with 15 points
and 10 boards. Walsh paced the Maple Leafs with 21 points. Hartman
added 15 and Jordan Buller finished with 10. The Foresters held
Goshen to 37% (25-67) shooting on the night, while shooting 52%
(31-60) from the field themselves.
