- The NAIA Division II
21st-ranked University of St. Francis (16-8, 7-3)
accomplished something that hadn’t been done for awhile. The Cougars
pulled off a 78-72 win over #5-ranked Huntington University (20-4,
8-2) on the Foresters’ home court. The loss snapped a 27-game home
winning streak for Huntington.
The Foresters had brief
leads in both halves, but it was St. Francis that had control most of
the way. The Cougars turned a 10-9 deficit at the 15:08 mark into a
23-15 lead on a Kevin Sindle trey midway through the period.
Huntington cut it to three twice, but couldn’t sustain the momentum
either time and headed to the locker room down six at 38-32.
In
the second half, the Foresters made several runs to keep St. Francis
in sight, but each time, the Cougars had an answer. St. Francis led
48-41 with 16:33 left in the half when Huntington finally appeared to
find some rhythm at the offensive end. The Foresters scored nine
consecutive points to take a 50-48 lead with 13:16 to go. Trey Eaton
immediately took the lead back with a long ball off an inbounds play.
The Foresters then jumped back in front 52-51 on two charity tosses
from Alex Kock, but it was the last time they saw the lead. The
Cougars came back with a 9-1 spurt over the next two minutes to go up
60-53.
Huntington again rallied back to within one at 64-63 with 5:00 minutes
to play, but back-to-back turnovers allowed St. Francis to push the
advantage back to five. The Foresters continued to battle and cut it
to two at 72-70 on a jumper by Kyle Ganton with 23 ticks left.
Following a timeout, the Foresters looked to steal the inbounds pass
and appeared to knock it out of bounds off a Cougar’s leg, but instead
Jared Yoder was whistled for a foul sending Mike Steinau to the line.
Steinau drained both free throws and the Cougars added four more in
the final 17 seconds to seal the win.
Kock topped all scorers in the game with 25 points while Ganton and
Yoder finished with 15 and 10 respectively for the Foresters. Eaton
led the Cougars with 21 and Mike Campbell added a double-double with
16 points and 17 rebounds. St. Francis won the battle of the boards
33-32 and had 11 turnovers to 15 for Huntington.
