- Huntington
University head basketball coach, Steve Platt, notched the 300th
win of his coaching career as his Foresters took down Taylor
University 66-48. Platt, who is in his 13th year at the
Forester helm, has compiled a 300-132 record with a 69.4 winning
percentage.
Taylor (13-13, 5-7)
took an early 4-0 lead in the contest, but it was short-lived as
Huntington (22-4, 10-2) scored the next nine points. The NAIA
Division II 4th-ranked Foresters led by as many as seven on
several occasions, but the Trojans cut it to five at 30-25 at the
break.
In
the second half, Huntington finally started to heat up at the
offensive end and slowly doubled the half-time margin. The Foresters
led 43-33 at the 14:11 mark, but again, Taylor trimmed the deficit to
five on a 15-foot jumper and a three-pointer from Daniel Cox.
Huntington responded with six unanswered points to push the advantage
back to double digits with just under 10 minutes to go and then put
the game away with another 10-3 run over the next five minutes. The
Foresters had their largest lead of 21 points twice in the last two
minutes before settling for the 18-point victory.
Huntington’s Kyle Ganton, who was a perfect 8-8 from the field on the
night, including 2-2 from behind the arc, took game-high honors with
19 points. Joining Ganton in double figures was Doug Sheckler with 18
points and seven rebounds and Alex Kock with 10 points. Chad Reynolds
led the Trojans with 16 points and Cox finished with 10.
Huntington won the battle of the boards 29-21 and shot 57% (24-42)
from the field while Taylor went 18-47 for 38%.
