- Senior Alex Kock
scored 16 of his team-high 24 points in the second half to fuel the
Foresters' 96-91 comeback win over the 20th-ranked Cougars of St.
Francis. Kock also added a game-high 14 rebounds in the contest
to record his sixth double-double of the season. The
Cougars were the aggressors in the first half and opened up a double
digit lead midway through the period behind some solid long-range
shooting. St. Francis knocked down six of 11 treys in the half,
including one from Kevin Sindle at the 5:22 mark that gave the Cougars
their largest lead of the game at 41-26.
HU answered with a 7-0 run over the next two minutes to cut the
deficit to eight and a Jared Yoder field goal with 35 seconds on the
clock trimmed it to five at 46-41 at the break.
An 11-5 spurt to
open the second half gave the Foresters their first lead of the game
at 52-51, but St. Francis forged back ahead with a 13-6 run of their
own. HU responded with six unanswered points to knot the score
at 64 with 12 minutes to play. After trading several baskets,
the Foresters finally began to gain some momentum.
With the score
still tied at 73-73, an old-fashioned 3-point play by Doug Sheckler at
the 7:53 mark finally gave HU the lead for good. Another
Sheckler field goal with 4:35 to play gave HU some breathing room with
an 85-79 advantage. The Cougars would not go away as they pulled
within two three times down the stretch, but they could get no closer
as Kyle Ganton went 4-4 from the line in the final 28 seconds to seal
the win.
Three Foresters
joined Kock in double figures for HU. Sheckler finished with 23
on 10-16 shooting, Ganton added 16 and Yoder chipped in 14 points and
seven assists. St. Francis guard, Mike Steinau, topped all
scorers in the game with 33 points. Mike Campbell added 18
points and 11 boards.
After shooting 63%
from the field in the second half, HU finished the game at 54%
(36-67), while the Cougars went 33-64 for 52% in the contest.
St. Francis won the battle of the boards 37-33.
