11.06.06 - IPFW senior guard Quintin Carouthers hit an off-balance jumper with one second left in overtime to give the Mastodons a 93-92 win over the Foresters (0-1).

With 1:34 to play in overtime, Chris Perkins gave the Mastodons a four-point cushion at 91-87 with a layup. HU's Kyle Benge fouled Perkins on the play sending him to the line for a chance to extend the lead to five.

Perkins missed the charity toss, but came up with his own rebound.  The Foresters picked up the intensity on defense and Benge came up with a big steal.  HU pushed it up the floor and Alex Kock cut it to two on a driving layup.  Kock was whistled for an offensive foul after the shot, which sent Carouthers to the line at the opposite end.

Carouthers missed the free throw, and the Foresters got the ball back with 54 seconds to go.  They worked the ball around to Doug Sheckler, who had made a living in the paint all night.  But this time his bank shot was off the mark and IPFW grabbed the rebound.  Again HU turned up the defensive pressure and forced another Mastodon turnover.

HU brought the ball up and call timeout down 91-89 with 26 seconds left.  Coach Platt gave the team the play and they ran it to perfection. Kyle Ganton, who was 0-5 on the night from behind the arc, found himself wide open at the top and he nailed the three to give the Foresters a 92-91 lead with 14 seconds to play.

Following an IPFW timeout, the Foresters again played solid defense denying the Mastodons any good looks, but the athletic Carouthers was able to knock down the off-balance shot with one tick left.  Kock's half-court heave at the buzzer was off the mark.

The Foresters were behind most of the game and had to overcome an 11-point halftime deficit to get back in the game.  HU was still down 11 at 66-55 with 13 minutes left in the second half, when they finally were able to chip away at IPFW's lead.  The Foresters made it all the way back and took an 80-77 lead on a Kock jumper with just under four minutes to play, but couldn't sustain it.  A layup by IPFW's Tyler Best knotted the score at 83-83 with 2:24 to play in regulation and neither team was able to find the bottom of the net the rest of the way.  HU had the last opportunity, but Sheckler's long three bounced off the front of the rim sending the game to an extra period..

For the game, Sheckler led all scorers with 34 points on 10-19 shooting from the field and 14-16 from the line.  Kock added a double-double with 26 points and 12 boards.  Ganton finished with 14 points and Benge chipped in 11 points and seven assists.  IPFW's Best was two assists shy of a triple double with 24 points, 10 rebounds and eight dishes.  Carouthers also finished with 24 points on the night.

The Mastodons shot 53.% (37-69) from the field while the Foresters were 34-65 for 52.3%. HU went 17-19 from the free throw line for 89% and IPFW shot 68.8% (11-16).
