NAIA First Team
All-American, Alex Kock, came three assists short of a triple double
to lead the Foresters (12-1) to an 81-69 win over Olivet Nazarene
University (6-5). To go along with his seven assists, Kock also
took game-high honors with 30 points and 12 rebounds.
HU got off to a quick
start with an 8-0
run over the first four minutes with six points coming
from Kock, but the Tigers answered with back-to-back threes, a layup
and a short jumper to tie the game at 10 with 12:40 left in the half.
The rest of the half was a seesaw battle with three more ties and six
lead changes. A layup by Kevin Kyle and another Kock jumper in
the final minute of the half gave HU a 31-28 advantage at the break.
In
the second half, the Foresters again used an early 11-4 spurt to open
a ten-point lead and another Kyle layup at the 14:47 mark gave HU its
largest lead of the game at 50-37.
The Tigers scrambled back within three at 56-53 on a Stan Chismark
trey with just under 10 minutes to play. The Foresters responded
with jumpers from Doug Sheckler and Kock to push the lead back to
seven, but ONU continued to hang around.
The Tigers again
narrowed the margin to 68-65 with 3:43 minutes left on a layup by
Tyler Wallenfang. HU freshman Luke Smith answered with a three from
the left wing to push the lead to 71-65. Bobby Huck scored on the
Tigers' next possession to cut it to four with 2:36 on the clock, but
they would get no closer as the Foresters went 8-8 from the line down
the stretch.
After marginal shooting performances in the first half, both teams
scorched the nets in the second half with the Foresters shooting a
torrid 65.4% from the field while ONU shot 55.2%. The Tigers won the
battle of the boards 30-28.
Joining Kock in
double figures for HU was Sheckler with 14 and Smith with 13.
Chismark led the Tigers with 24 points and 8 rebounds.
