After suffering a
setback in their previous game, the NAIA Division II top-ranked
Foresters (13-2) bounced back with a 94-88 road win over NAIA Division
II #9 Cedarville University (9-3).
Cedarville led
briefly early in the contest, but HU used an 8-0 run to turn a 4-2
deficit into a 10-4 advantage with 15:15 to go in the half. The
Yellow Jackets hung around throughout the remainder of the period and
used an old-fashioned 3-point play to knot the score at 39 at
intermission.
After trading buckets to start the second half, the game was still
tied at 45-45 when HU’s Alex Kock knocked down a trey and followed
that with another jumper to put the Foresters in front by five.
Another three from Kyle Ganton and a pair of Kevin Kyle free throws
gave HU some breathing room with a 61-51 lead at the 11:38 mark.
Cedarville pulled within six on two occasions including 79-73 with
2:28 remaining, but another Kock long ball on the Foresters’ next
possession ended the run. HU then nailed 12 consecutive charity
tosses over the final 1:37 to seal the victory.
HU was led by a trio of Foresters combined for 78 of HU’s 94 points.
Kock topped all scorers in the game with 36 points and a game-high 10
boards, while Ganton and Doug Sheckler both added 21 points. Sheckler
also chipped in eight rebounds and Ganton was a perfect 8-8 at the
line. The Yellow Jackets were led by Ryan Short with 19 points and
Chris Beals with 15.
The Foresters shot 53% from the field for the game and were 20-22 for
91% at the free throw line. Cedarville finished the game shooting 45%
from the field and 82% (14-17) at the line.
