The NAIA top-ranked Foresters
(15-2) had little trouble with NAIA Division I St. Xavier University
(12-4) as they cruised past the Cougars 71-56.
A 2-2 tie in the early
minutes of the game was the only time in the contest that the Cougars
had a glimpse of HU. An Alex Kock trey at the 18-:05 mark made
it 5-2 and the Foresters wasted no time sprinting away. A Doug
Sheckler layup gave HU its first double digit lead at 17-7 with 14:24
left in the half. The margin was still 10 at 32-22 with 6:17 on
the clock, but the Foresters stretched it to 18 at the break with an
11-3 run over the final six minutes of the period.
A Luke Smith
three-pointer to start the second half pushed the Foresters' lead to
21 and they were never threatened the remainder of the game. St.
Xavier got as close as 11 with just under four minutes to play, but a
7-1 HU spurt put the game out of reach.
The Foresters had a
balanced scoring attack with four in double figures. Kyle Ganton
headed the list with 22 points followed by Doug Sheckler with 15, Kock
with 12 and Smith with 10. Jared Yoder chipped in seven points
and 10 assists for HU. Ken McCormick led the Cougars with 12
points.
