- With the offense sputtering in the first half, the
Foresters (10-1, 4-0) kept Taylor University (7-6, 2-2) close with
their defense and then held the Trojans to just 18 points in the
second half to pull away for the 61-44 victory.
Things looked good
early for HU as they jumped out to an 8-0 lead, but the Trojans
stepped up their defense and held the Foresters to just three points
over the next eight minutes to pull even at 11 with 8:41 left in the half.
The remainder of the
half saw another run by both teams, but a driving layup by Bret
Burchard with three seconds to go was the difference as Taylor took a
26-25 lead at intermission.
The defensive battle
was evidenced by poor shooting for both squads as neither team
reached 40% for the half.
The second half was a
different story for HU. The Foresters emerged from the locker
room and put together an 11-2 run to open up a 36-28 margin with just
over 16 minutes to go. Over the next five minutes, HU continued
to add to its advantage and an Alex Kock field goal at the 9:36 mark
gave the Foresters a 46-33 lead.
Taylor had one more
run left and cut it to 50-44 with 4:47 on the clock, but HU's defense
stepped up and held the Trojans scoreless the remainder of the game.
The Foresters limited Taylor to 30% (8-27) shooting in the second
half, while knocking down 60% (12-20) themselves.
Kock topped four
double digit scorers for HU with 22 points and he added nine rebounds.
Kyle Benge finished with 14 points, Kyle Ganton chipped in 12 and Doug
Sheckler added 11 points and nine boards. Daniel Cox was the
lone Trojan in double figures with 16.
