12.07.06 - The NAIA Division II top-ranked Foresters also lead the
nation in another category, free throw shooting, and it paid off for
them in their 67-64 victory over NAIA Division I 16th-ranked
Georgetown College.
With the Tigers
knocking down one more field goal than HU, the Foresters hit 19 of
their 24 charity tosses, while Georgetown was 15-23. Although HU
is leading Division II at 84.1% from the line for the season, their
79% in the game was good enough to edge the Tigers for the win.
Kyle Ganton, the Foresters' top free throw shooter at 93%, set a
school record in the game going 13-13 from the stripe.
The
Tigers opened the game with a 10-3 run over the first four minutes,
but HU quickly reined them in and tied the score at 12-12 with 12:16
to go in the half. Riding the momentum, the Foresters put
together a 16-3 spurt to take their largest lead of the game at 28-15
with just under five minutes left in the half. The two teams
traded six unanswered points down the stretch, and HU headed to the
locker room with a 34-25 advantage.
Over the first six
minutes of the second half, the Foresters pushed their lead back to 13
at 49-36 on three free throws from Ganton at the 14:15 mark, but
Georgetown wasn't going away.
The Tigers slowly
began to chip away at HU's lead and pulled within three at 53-50 with
nine minutes to go and then knotted the score at 59 with 3:08 on the
clock. Georgetown took a 62-61 lead on a put back by Brian
Silverhorn at the two minutes mark, but James Haifley came up with a
Jared Yoder miss at the other end, which set up an Alex Kock's trey
with 1:31 to play.
After trading
turnovers, the Tigers had two chances to tie the score, but couldn't
convert. Kyle Benge was fouled and hit one of two to give HU a
65-62 cushion with :30 remaining. Georgetown's Chris Gaither hit
a jumper 12 seconds later to make it 65-64, and then the Tigers fouled
Ganton with 10 ticks left. Ganton knocked down both shots and
Craig Schoen's jumper at the buzzer was off the mark.
HU's Kock took
game-high honors with 23 points and he added 10 rebounds. Ganton
finished with 21 points and Benge chipped in 10. Donnovan Brown
led the Tigers with 16 points and 12 boards. Georgetown
out-rebounded the Foresters 41-28 including 22-7 on the offensive
boards.
