Huntington University Foresters (26-4, 14-2) rounded out their regular
season with an 81-69 win over Grace College (19-10, 7-9). With the
win, Huntington also secured the top seed in next week’s Mid-Central
Conference tournament, giving them home court advantage in the
post-season.
The Foresters opened
the game with a 5-0 spurt, but Grace battled back and took its only
lead of the contest at 10-9 on a three by Marcus Moore. Huntington
came back with a 10-2 run to go up seven at 19-12 midway through the
half and then slowly pulled away from the Lancers over the final 10
minutes. Two free throws by Jared Yoder with 32 seconds left gave the
Foresters a 41-27 margin at the break.
In
the second half, Huntington continued to increase its advantage to as
many as 20 with 13:11 left and kept the lead in double digits the
remainder of the game. Grace got back within 10 twice in the closing
minutes, but the Foresters’ closed out the win, hitting 11 of 12
charity tosses down the stretch.
Huntington’s Alex Kock topped all scorers in the game with 24 points.
Joining Kock in double figures for the Foresters was Kyle Ganton with
23, Luke Smith with 12 and Jared Yoder with 11. Austin Kaiser led the
Lancers with 19 points off the bench. Grace’s Eric Gaff grabbed a
game-high nine rebounds. The Foresters won the battle of the boards
32-27.
The Foresters return to action on Wednesday, February 21 when host the
#8seeded Marian College in first round action of the Mid-Central Conference tournament
at 7:00 p.m.
