University senior forward, Alex Kock, scored the Foresters’ first 13
points of the game and finished with 30 to lead NAIA Division II 8th-ranked
Huntington (23-4, 11-2) past Spring Arbor University (16-12, 4-10)
72-54. Kock, who entered the contest needing 14 points to join
Huntington’s 2000-point club, reached the milestone on a traditional
three-point play with 2:13 left in the first half. He becomes the
fifth Forester to score 2000 points in a career and his total
currently stands at 2016.
Spring Arbor’s only
lead of the game came when Justin DeKock hit a layup to open the
scoring. Kock then outscored the Cougars 13-5 over the next eight
minutes to give Huntington a 13-7 lead at the 11:19 mark. Spring
Arbor was still within five at 18-13 five minutes later, but an 11-2
Huntington run helped the Foresters take command of the game and they
headed to the break with a 31-19 lead.
In
the second half, it was all Huntington. The Foresters pushed the lead
to 20 midway through the half and didn’t allow the Cougars to get any
closer than 14 the remainder of the game. After both teams shot
poorly in the first half, Huntington came back and hit 14-28 shots in
the second half for 50% while Spring Arbor’s percentage remained the
same at 35%.
Joining Kock in double figures for the Foresters was Kyle Ganton with
16 and Doug Sheckler with 12. Kock added a game-high 11 rebounds to
record his 17th double-double of the season.
Jared List led Spring Arbor with 15 points and Darby Decker added 11.
