01.19.08 - Down ten at the half, the Foresters (15-6, 5-2)
blistered the nets at a 71% clip in the second half to rally for the
89-85 win over Goshen College (15-6, 3-4).
Things were tight over the first 13
minutes of play with seven ties and HU leading by no more than five
points at 22-17. Goshen then held the Foresters without a field
goal for four minutes allowing the Maple Leafs to
take a 27-24 lead at the 6:40 mark. Doug Sheckler finally ended the
drought with a lay-up to make it 27-26, but Goshen used a 14-5 run to
open a double digit lead with 2:10 to go in the half and made it stick
at 45-35 as the teams headed to their locker rooms.
After shooting just
38.7% from the field in the first half, HU immediately turned things
around to start the second half. The Foresters knocked down
their first four shot attempts and six of their first seven to pull
within three at 51-48 five minutes into the period. HU continued
to battle and took its first lead of the half at 70-67 on a Kyle Benge
trey with 7:18 to go.
The Foresters were
able to maintain a small lead for most of the next six minutes and
were clinging to a 78-76 lead when Kellen Zawadzki drained a three to
put HU up five with under a minute to play. HU then went 8-8
from the line to close out the win.
Five Foresters scored in double figures in the win. Benge headed the
list with 25 followed by Sheckler with 17, Tyler Shively and Zawadzki
with 12 and Luke Smith with 10. Goshen's Errick McCollum topped all
scorers in the game with 28 and Nate West chipped in a double-double
with 14 points and 13 rebounds.
