The NAIA Division I 2nd-ranked
Tigers of Georgetown College (15-0) remained unbeaten on the season
with their 79-73 win over the NAIA Division II 12th-ranked
Huntington University Foresters (12-6). The game was filled by
several momentum swings, but the Tigers were able to hold off HU's
final charge for the win.
Georgetown opened the game with a 5-0
run and pushed the lead to seven at 12-5 five minutes into the
contest. The Foresters reined in the Tigers knotting the score
at 12 on a thunderous dunk by Doug Sheckler at the 11:50 mark.
On HU's next possession, the game took a critical turn. Sheckler
rebounded a Kyle Benge miss and took the ball strong to the hole. He
missed the layup and came down hard on his elbow forcing him to the
sideline for the remainder of the game.
The Foresters kept
it close over the next three minutes with the score still tied at 18
with 8:18 to play in the half. The Tigers then put together a
17-3 run to take a 14-point lead at 35-21 with just over four minutes
to go. HU battled down the stretch and was able to cut the
deficit to 37-30 at the break.
The Foresters
emerged from the locker room with renewed energy and worked their way
back to a 44-44 tie over the first five minutes. With the game
still tied at 49, again it was Georgetown coming up with a timely run.
The Tigers built an 11-point advantage over a seven-minute span and
held a 70-59 lead with 4:10 to play.
HU cut it to seven
at 74-67 with 38 seconds left and then began to foul. After
Justin Taylor hit two from the line, Luke Smith nailed a three to cut
it to six. Gordon Chase then hit one of two at the stripe and
Smith sank another trey to make it 77-73 with eight seconds left.
Chase knocked down the next two free throws and Andrew Mock missed a
three at the buzzer for the 79-73 final.
Georgetown’s Chase
topped all scorers in the game with 21 points. Joining him in double
figures for the Tigers was Kyle Saxton with 20 and David Graham
and Demetrius Guoins each with 11. Kyle Benge led
Huntington with 20 points and Smith finished with 17. Kevin Kyle
chipped in a double-double with 16 points and a game-high 12 boards.
