- For the third consecutive year, the Foresters laid claim to their own
tournament title winning the Ness Bros./Huntington University classic
with an 86-79 overtime win over NAIA Division I 11th-ranked
Campbellsville University. The win makes it four victories in a
row for HU after starting the season 0-2.
In the final 15 seconds of regulation, both teams traded 1-for-2 trips
at the foul line to keep the score knotted at 63-63 and a desperation
Tyler Shively three-pointer at the buzzer was off the mark.
In the extra
period, Kellen Zawadzki took over for the Foresters. He scored 11 of
HU's first 13 points and almost single-handedly built an 11-point
cushion at 78-67 with 50 seconds to play. A couple turnovers
allowed Campbellsville to get back within four at 78-74 with 37
seconds to play, but Shively and Doug Sheckler were a combined 8-8
from the charity stripe down the stretch to seal the win.
Sheckler led the
Foresters with 22 points and 13 rebounds. He was joined in
double figures in scoring by Shively with 16, Kevin Kyle with 15, Kyle
Benge with 12 off the bench and Zawadzki, who scored all 11 of his
points in the overtime period. Troy Harris took game-high honors
with 24 points for the Tigers. Sheckler was named the tournament
MVP and was joined on the All-Tournament team by Shively, Kevin Kyle,
Zawadzki, and Campbellsville's Bubba Long and Nestor Colmenares.
HU shot 45.3%
(29-64) for the game and went 20-22 at the line for 90.0%. The
Foresters committed just 14 turnovers to 22 for Campbellsville.
The Foresters
earned their way into the championship game with a 117-75 blowout over
Kuyper College in Friday night's game.
HU ran out to a
59-34 half-time lead and cruised to the easy victory.
Six Foresters
reached double figures in the game. Kevin Kyle paced HU with 18
points and six rebounds. Sheckler had 14 points and six boards.
Benge finished with 13. David Lash and Andrew Mock each added 12
and Zawadzki chipped in 11.
