- The Foresters (6-2)
built an 18-point cushion by the break and then rode the big lead to
the 98-89 win over the Titans of Indiana University South Bend.
Midway through the
first period, IU South Bend was still within two at 27-25, but a 12-1
Forester spurt gave HU a 39-26 advantage with just under six minutes
to play in the half. Huntington then scored the final seven points of
the period to take a 52-34 lead to the break.
The two teams traded baskets much of the first 10 minutes of the
second half with the Foresters still leading by 17 at the 10:27 mark.
The Titans then began to show some life. IU South Bend out-scored HU
15-6 over the next five minutes to get back within single digits at
75-67 with 5:37 to play. Six points from Doug Sheckler and a free
throw from Kyle Benge pushed it back to a 14–point lead, but the
Titans wouldn’t go away. IU South Bend got back within eight on three
more occasions, but the Foresters knocked down 12 straight free throws
down the stretch to seal the win.
HU’s trio of Sheckler, Kevin Kyle and Luke Smith led the team with 20
points a piece and Benge added 18. Kevin Kyle also grabbed a
game-high 10 rebounds as HU out-rebounded the Titans 40-33. IU South
Bend’s Dewey Brown led all scorers in the game with 23 and Tyler
Leighton chipped in 20.
The Foresters went 32-57 from the field for 56.1% and hit 30 of 37
charity tosses for 81.1%. The Titans hit 28 of 66 field goals for
42.4% and were 26-33 at the line for 78.8%.
