- After battling through 15 lead changes and four ties, it was the NAIA
#2-ranked Bethel College Pilots that put together a late burst to
propel them past HU 78-68. The Foresters (12-6, 1-3) were up
one at 53-52 midway through the second half when Bethel (18-1, 4-1)
made a 15-2 run over a four-minute span that put them in command as
they headed down the stretch.
HU got the Pilots attention early
taking a 14-8 lead six minutes into the contest. Over the next
nine minutes the two teams traded three seven-point runs which left
the Pilots up one at 27-26 at the 4:15 mark. With the score
knotted at 31, Bethel out-scored HU 5-1 over the final two minutes
to take a 36-32 lead at the break.
William Walker
knocked down the first bucket of the second half to put the Pilots
up six, but again the Foresters rallied to take a 46-45 lead on a
Kyle Benge jumper at the 12:54 mark. After trading baskets and
the lead on seven consecutive possessions, a HU turnover broke the
string and Bethel took advantage. The Pilots moved ahead by
three on a Walker field goal and were still up 58-55 with 7:37 to
go. Two free throws by Wes Laidig pushed Bethel's advantage to
five and the Foresters failed to answer back. Two turnovers
and a missed field goal later, HU found itself down 12 at 67-55 with
just under six minutes left to play. The stretch proved costly
as the Foresters were not able to get any closer than eight over the
final four minutes of the contest.
Bethel's Walker
topped all scorers in the game with 26 points. He was joined
in double figures by Laidig with 15 and Ryne Lightfoot and Caleb
Laidig both with 12. Benge paced the Foresters with 23 points
and Kevin Kyle chipped in a double-double with 10 points and 12
rebounds.
