The Huntington University Foresters (3-2) took on Kuyper College in
the first round of the Ness Bros. Hall of Fame Classic and cruised
to a 109-57 win over the Cougars (0-6).
Kuyper’s Andrew DeKam put the first two points on the scoreboard,
but it was the only glimpse of the lead the Cougars would have.
Luke Smith drained a three at the other end to put the Foresters in
front and they never looked back. Huntington ran off 16 consecutive
points and 29 of the next 31 to take a 29-4 lead nine minutes into
the contest. The Foresters’ barrage continued the remainder of the
half and they held a 57-23 advantage at the break.
The second half was not much different. The Cougars had no answers
for Huntington’s onslaught. The Foresters steadily increased their
lead throughout the half and reached the century mark on a Kellen
Zawadzki trey with 5:50 to play. A steal by Alex Nafziger and a
lay-up by Zawadzki gave Huntington its largest lead of the game at
102-48 and they finished with the 52-point rout.
The Foresters put seven players in double figures with Zawadzki
topping the list with 22 points. Nafziger and Kevin Kyle both
chipped double-doubles with 17 points apiece and 12 and 10 rebounds
respectively. Luke Smith had 14 points, Caleb Kennedy and Geoff
Scheetz both added 12 and Kyle Benge finished with 10 points and six
assists. Andrew DeKam led all scorers in the game with 30 points.
Huntington shot 48.8% (42-86) from the field to just 37.1% (23-62)
for Kuyper. The Foresters dominated the boards out-rebounding the
Cougars 57-32.
In the opening game of the evening, Cardinal Stritch University held
off a feisty Concordia University squad for a 73-67 win. Concordia
will face Kuyper College in the consolation game at 1:00 p.m.
tomorrow and the Foresters will take on Cardinal Stritch in the
championship game at 3:00 p.m.
