- The Huntington
University Foresters stepped up their defensive pressure in the
second half and tamed the feisty Mustangs of Marygrove College to
pick up the 91-74 victory.
The Foresters got
off to a quick start at 12-2 and made it a 12-point margin at 16-4
on an Andrew Mock jumper at the 14:05 mark. Marygrove battled back
within six at 18-12 three minutes later and remained within single
digits until the Mustangs knotted the score at 31-31 with five
minutes to play in the half. The Foresters responded with four
consecutive points to reclaim the lead and headed to the locker room
holding a slim 40-38 advantage.
Marygrove emerged from the break and scored the first
four points of the second half to take a 42-40 lead. Huntington
came back with an 11-3 run to go back in front 51-45. After trading
baskets over the next two minutes, the Foresters’ defense took
command of the game. Huntington held the Mustangs scoreless for a
two minute stretch and turned a six point lead into a double-digit
advantage at 62-49 that they would never give up. Marygrove battled
back within 10 at the 4:57 mark, but could get no closer. The
Foresters knocked down 13 of 14 charity tosses down the stretch to
seal the 17-point victory.
Kyle Benge and Caleb Kennedy both scored 17 points to
pace Huntington’s offense. Kevin Kyle finished with 14 points and a
game-high nine boards. Kellen Zawadzki and Tyler Shively chipped in
11 and 10 points respectively. Marcus Hopkins topped all scorers in
the game with 19 points for the Mustangs. Teammate Justin McKinney
finished with 11 and Michael Jackson added 10 off the bench.
The Foresters (11-4) went 31-60 from the field for
51.7% while Marygrove was 29-72 for 40.3%. Huntington out-rebounded
the Mustangs 47-32.
