2001-02 Season Summary

Three Foresters Receive Post-Season Honors
3/13/02

Three men's basketball players have earned NAIA All-America honors to cap off a stellar season. Senior David Porter has received First Team All-America honors for the second straight year, while teammates Adam Hill and Brett Snodgrass were Honorable Mention  All-Americans. Congratulations on an outstanding accomplishment!

Foresters Ousted By Northwestern
3/8/02

The aggressive offensive style of the Northwestern Red Raiders earned them a 92-80 victory over the Foresters ending HC’s hope of a second trip to the Final Four.  Up just one at the half, the Red Raiders shot a blistering 74% from the field, scoring on numerous driving layups and points in the paint.  Their aggressiveness also earned them 29 trips to the foul line where they outscored HC 19 to 4.  Despite having seven fewer turnovers than Northwestern, the Foresters were unable to convert the Red Raiders’ miscues into easy scoring opportunities.  Down 51-49 with 16:47 remaining in the game, the Foresters were out-scored 17-7 over the next four minutes to fall behind 68-56.  The Foresters responded with a 10-3 run to draw within five at 71-66, but could get no closer.  The fourth-seeded Red Raiders put four players in double figures with Brandon Jacobson leading the way with 26 points.  Adam Hill scored 26 of his own for the Foresters, followed by Eric Ferrell with 18.  David Porter and Brett Snodgrass contributed 14 and 10 points respectively.  HC finishes the year with a 26-11 record.  Congratulations Foresters on an impressive season!

Foresters Grab First Round Win
3/7/02

The Foresters got their first tournament win under their belts with a 76-60 win over the Hawks of Holy Names College, CA. Although the Hawks entered the tournament sporting the lowest points allowed per game average, the Forester offense, behind the hustle of Ryan Thwaits, scored more points than any other Hawk opponent this season. Thwaits played an aggressive game on both ends of the floor, holding Holy Names' leading scorer, Funtaine Ware, to just 8 points on the defensive end, while cutting and slashing his way to a team-high 18 points on the opposite end. The Foresters, who entered the tournament ranked 1st nationally in team free throw percentage, also capitalized at the line going 22 for 23 and out-scoring Holy Names 22 to 10 from the stripe. HC's offensive balance was in evidence again as David Porter scored 16 points, Eric Ferrell scored 14 off the bench on 5 of 6 shooting, including 4 for 5 from behind the arc, and Adam Hill added 13. Hawks center, Jovan Obradovic, took game-high honors with 20 points. With the win, HC moves to the Sweet 16 where they will face the defending national champions from a year ago, the Northwestern College Red Raiders. The Red Raiders defeated the St. Joseph's Monks 86-69 earlier today. The Foresters and Red Raiders will square off tomorrow at 4:30 p.m. CST. Foresters Return to NAIA Nationals
2/26/02

With the Foresters down two at the half, HC's Brett Snodgrass put the team on his back, carried them to an 84-61 victory over Marian College, and propelled them to another berth in the NAIA National Tournament.  After scoring just 4 points at the foul line in the first half, Snodgrass took over in the second scoring 28 points on 9 of 12 shooting, including 5 for 5 from downtown.  His performance was one better than the entire Knight output of 27 points for the half.  With 11:34 left in the game, Marian's James Gardner scored to cut HC's lead to six, but an 8-0 run by the Foresters pushed the lead back to 14 at 59-45.  The Knights countered with five unanswered points to get within nine at 59-50, but a 3-pointer by Justin Riegsecker ended the streak and ignited an 18-5 HC run that sealed the win.  David Porter scored 18 points and Adam Hill had 13 behind Snodgrass' 32.  Marian was led by James Gardner's 22 points.  Crowned MCC Tournament Champions, the 25-10 Foresters are awaiting word of their seeding for the first round of the NAIA Division II National Tournament in Branson, Missouri.  The tournament brackets should be set later today.  Tournament information can be found on the NAIA website.

Foresters Advance to MCC Final
2/23/02

The Indiana Wesleyan University Wildcats kept the game close most of the way, but in the end, succumbed to the Foresters 80-67.  With the win, the Foresters now advance to the championship game of the MCC tournament.  Marian's 70-67 upset win over the #1 seed, Taylor University, sets up a third straight HC-Marian MCC final which will be played at Huntington on Tuesday, February 26 at 7:00 p.m.  After a 7-0 run by IWU brought them to within two at 55-53 with just under nine minutes to play, the Foresters regrouped and came back with a 13-4 run of their own and nailed their free throws down the stretch to move another step closer to returning to the NAIA National Tournament in Branson, MO.  For the game, Wildcat Aaron Willson led all scorers with 26, while the Foresters were led by their big three.  Brett Snodgrass dropped in 22, and David Porter and Adam Hill added 19 apiece.  With the win, the Foresters move to 24-10 on the season. Foresters Advance in MCC Tournament
2/20/02

Holding a slim 2-point lead at 65-63 with 5:28 remaining on the clock, the Foresters outscored the Grace College Lancers 9-3 over the next four minutes and put the game out of reach.  The 82-73 win moves HC to the semifinal round of the MCC Tournament, in which they will host #7-seed Indiana Wesleyan University, an upset winner over the University of St. Francis.  The game is set for Saturday, February 23 at 3:00 p.m.  A very scrappy Lancer squad all but erased an 11-point deficit in the first half to go into the locker room down just two, and they whittled down an HC 10-point lead in the second half, but again could get no closer than two.  It was HC's offensive balance that proved to be too much for Grace as five different Foresters contributed in their final 17 points.  For the game, Grace's Matt Abernethy dropped in 30 points to lead all scorers.  HC got 26 from the MCC Player of the Year, David Porter, 16 from Brett Snodgrass, a double-double of 11 points and 11 assists from Adam Hill, and 10 points from Eric Ferrell.  The win raises the Forester's record to 23-10. Porter Two-Time Player of Year
2/20/02

The Mid-Central Conference has announced its awards for the 2001-02 season and Huntington College senior, forward David Porter, repeats as Conference Player of the Year.  Porter is the first repeat winner since Bethel’s Rico Swanson earned back-to-back honors in 1996-97 and 1997-98.    Joining Porter on the first team are James Gardner (Marian College), Matt Abernathy (Grace College), Adam Musters (Taylor University), and Alan Jones (Taylor University).  Huntington College juniors, Brett Snodgrass and Adam Hill, were named 2nd Team All-Conference and senior Eric Ferrell received Honorable Mention.

Foresters Lose Regular Season Finale
2/16/02

After being down one at the half, the Foresters came out strong to start the second, but couldn't sustain the momentum for the full 20 minutes and fell 87-84 to the Cougars of St. Francis.  HC tied its biggest lead of the game when Marcus Hall scored on a layup to put the Foresters up 65-59 with 10:43 to go.  But with 6:27 showing on the clock and the Foresters up one at 70-69, the Cougars outscored HC 11-3 over the next three minutes to take an 80-73 lead that proved too large for the Foresters to overcome.  The Cougars went 7 for 9 from the charity stripe down the stretch to seal the win.  St. Francis put four in double figures with Jontae Jones leading the way with 23 points.  David Porter and Adam Hill each scored 22 to lead the Foresters.  The loss dropped the Foresters to a second place tie with the Cougars behind the conference champion Taylor University Trojans to end the regular season.  Because St. Francis beat Taylor earlier in the season, the Cougars received the second seed in the tournament.  The #3-seeded Foresters will host the #6 Grace College Lancers this Wednesday, February 20 at 7:00 p.m. Box scores...

Foresters Improve to 22-9
2/12/02

The Foresters got back to their winning ways defeating the Indiana Wesleyan University Wildcats 88-82.  Down 40-36 at the half,  HC needed its top guns to take charge of the game.  Brett Snodgrass rose to the challenge early, hitting several long-range bombs to help the Foresters erase their half-time deficit, and down the stretch, it was Adam Hill that scored six straight points and sealed the win from the line for the Foresters.  Snodgrass finished with a game-high 28 points, including 6 of 11 from 3-point range.  Hill added 19, David Porter had 12 points and 9 rebounds, and Marcus Hall chipped in 10 points.  The Wildcats put five in double figures with Aaron Brother's 22 points leading the way.  With the win, HC improves to 22-9 on the season and 10-3 in the MCC.

Taylor Takes Down Foresters
2/9/02

The Foresters' hopes of hanging on to sole ownership of first place in the conference suffered a huge blow when Eric Ferrell's 3-point attempt to tie the game missed the mark and gave Taylor University the 77-74 win.  With two games remaining on the conference schedule, the Trojans (22-6, 9-3) are now atop the MCC having swept their two meetings with the Foresters (21-9, 9-3) this season.  In Saturday's contest,  HC's meager one-point lead at the half proved to be insufficient to hold off the 62% shooting performance of the Trojans in the final period.  Taylor's Adam Musters and Matt Traylor scored 18 apiece to lead the Trojans, while Eric Ferrell's career-high 29 points, that included 6 of 9 from 3-point range, led all scorers.  David Porter, who needed three points to pass #3 Gabe LaGrange (1996-00, 2191) on HC's all-time scoring list, dropped in 22 for the Foresters and now has 2211 career points.  Adam Hill was the only other Forester in double figures with 14.  Box scores...

Foresters Down Grace
2/5/02

A near-perfect performance from the free throw line helped lift the Foresters to a 94-84 win over Grace College.  HC hit 25 of 26 from the charity stripe, while the Lancers were just 10 for 13 for the game.  Despite Grace hitting four more field goals in the first half, the Foresters built a seven point halftime lead with their 14 for 14 shooting from the line, and then held off the Lancers to secure the win.  David Porter had a monstrous night scoring 32 points and grabbing 13 rebounds.  Adam Hill netted 24 and Brett Snodgrass added 18 for the Foresters.  Grace's Matt Abernethy scored 30 to lead the Lancers.  With the win, the Foresters improve to 21-8 on the season and 9-2 in the MCC. Foresters Fall to Bethel in Overtime
2/2/02

It was another classic confrontation between the Bethel College Pilots and the Huntington College Foresters that saw 18 ties, 19 lead changes and an overtime period before a winner was determined.  With the score knotted at 100 and six seconds remaining in the overtime period, the Pilots got the ball up the floor and into Tim Ritter's hands.  Ritter shot a high-arching shot over a leaping David Porter that found the bottom of the net, giving Bethel the 102-100 victory.  Five Pilots scored in double figures for the game, with Ritter leading all scorers with 26 points.  HC's Porter led five Foresters in double digits with 24 points.  The loss drops the men to 20-8 on the season and 8-2 in the conference. Box scores...

Foresters Outlast Marian
1/29/02

With the last four Huntington/Marian match-ups decided by four points or less, round five proved to be no different as HC defeated the Knights 69-67.  Up five with just over a minute to play, the Foresters looked to have the game in hand, but two HC turnovers and a foul on a Marian shooter gave the Knights life.  With HC up 67-64, Marian's Brad Metzger went to the line for two shots.  He hit the first and rimmed out the second, but it was Marian's Montay Crowder that got the offensive rebound and the putback to tie the score at 67 with 5 seconds remaining.  After a timeout, HC inbounded the ball to Adam Hill, who drove the length of the court and scored a layup at the buzzer to give the Foresters their 20th win of the season.  Brett Snodgrass led all scorers with 19, while David Porter added 15 and Adam Hill had 10.  Marian's James Gardner, Brad Metzger, and Andy Emberton each scored 13 for the Knights.  The Foresters are now 20-7 and 8-1 in the conference.  Box scores...

Foresters Dominate Maple Leafs
1/26/02

After totally dominating St. Francis earlier in the week, the Foresters continued their hot streak with a 113-62 drubbing of the Goshen College Maple Leafs.  HC shot out to a 14-0 lead to begin the game and increased it to 52-25 at the half.  An 18-2 Forester run to begin the second half put the game out of reach for good.  For the game, HC shot a blistering 56% from the field, including 50% from behind the arc where they were 16 for 32.  David Porter took top scoring honors for the game scoring 31 points in just 26 minutes of playing time.  Brett Snodgrass finished the game with 20, while Justin Riegsecker and Marcus Hall each scored 12 off the bench.  Eric Ferrell was the fifth Forester to reach double digits with 11.  Goshen's Phil Mikel led the Maple Leafs with 18 points.  With the win, the Foresters move to 19-7 on the season and 7-1 in the MCC.  Box scores...

Foresters Remain Atop MCC
1/22/02

The Foresters scored the first eight points of the contest and never looked back as they ran away with a 97-68 win over the Cougars of St. Francis.  Hot shooting coupled with a sticky defense helped HC keep the Cougars at bay all night and kept the Foresters atop the Mid-Central Conference with a 6-1 record at the mid-point of the conference season.  The Foresters shot 52% from the field and held St. Francis to 39% for the game.  David Porter and Brett Snodgrass had 22 apiece for HC and Adam Hill added 16.  Three players, Jontae James, Chase Holden, and Roger Randolph, each scored 12 points to lead the Cougars.  With the win, the Foresters improve to 18-7 on the season. Box scores...

Foresters Get Comeback Win
1/19/02

After falling behind by 11 in the second half to a scrappy Indiana Wesleyan team, the Foresters fought their way back behind their All-American, David Porter, and pulled out their fifth conference win of the season 81-77.  Down 53-42, Porter scored 10 of HC's next 14 points, including a spectacular dunk on an Eric Ferrell missed three-point attempt, to pull the Foresters back within two at 58-56.  Adam Hill scored six points during the comeback, and his two free throws with 8:04 on the clock put the Foresters up 60-59.  With less than a minute to play and the scored tied at 75, Brett Snodgrass curled around a screen and hit Marcus Hall who rolled to the basket.  Hall scored the layup and was fouled, but missed the free throw.  Wildcat Aaron Brothers' jumper was off the mark and HC sealed the win at the charity stripe.  Porter led all scorers with 29 point and 9 rebounds.  Hill added 16 and Snodgrass had 15.  Indiana Wesleyan put four in double figures, led by Aaron Willson's 20 points.  The win raises the men's record to 17-7 overall and 5-1 in the conference. Box scores...

HC Succumbs to Taylor Defense
1/15/02

Taylor University turned up the heat defensively on the Foresters and handed them their first conference loss 82-73.  The Trojans held HC, who had been shooting 46% from the field, to just 36%, while shooting 54% from the field themselves.  Down eight at the half, the Foresters mounted a couple comebacks in the second half, but Taylor hit their free throws down the stretch to seal the win.  Taylor's Adam Musters led all scorers with 26 points on 10 of 15 shooting.  David Porter had 18 to lead the Foresters.  The loss drops HC (16-7) into a first place tie in the conference with Taylor at 4-1.   Box scores...

HC Remains Undefeated in MCC
1/12/02

After leading by as many as 18 early in the second half, the Foresters allowed Grace to get within one at 68-67 with 3 minutes to play.  Adam Hill then took over and scored six unanswered points to push the lead back to seven and helped secure the 81-75 victory.  Brett Snodgrass, this week's MCC Player of the Week, led five Foresters in double figures with 22.  Hill had 18 on the day, while Marcus Hall, David Porter, and Eric Ferrell added 13, 12, 11 points respectively.  Snodgrass put together very impressive stats for the week that earned him the Player of the Week honors.  He averaged 32 ppg on 56.7% (17-30) shooting from the field, including 47.8% (11-23) from 3-point range and shot 95% (19-20) from the line.  His performance helped HC remain the lone undefeated team in the conference at 4-0.  The win over Grace moves the men to 16-6 overall.   Box scores...

HC Moves to 3-0 in MCC
1/8/02

With the Bethel College defense smothering David Porter all night, Brett Snodgrass put the team on his back and carried the Foresters to a 95-77 win with his 42-point performance.  Snodgrass went 11 for 17 from the field including 8 of 14 from behind the arc and 12 for 12 from the line.  His perfection at the line tied a school record for highest free throw percentage in a game.  Gene Gibson (12-12, 1955) and Jeff Shepherd (12-12, 12/16/95) also share the record.  HC's defense also rose to the occasion and held the high-powered Pilot offense, which came into the game averaging 96 ppg, to 77 points, their lowest total of the season.  Adam Hill was the only other Forester to reach double figures with 17 points.  Bethel was led by Jake Parker with 14 points.  The win raises the men's record to 15-6 on the season and 3-0 in the MCC.  Box scores...

Foresters Falter on the Road
1/5/02

The Foresters were outlasted by the Malone College Pioneers in a 112-101 shootout.  HC held an eight point lead at the half, but the Pioneers tied it at 89-89 to send the game into overtime.  In the extra period, the Foresters were a dismal 4 for 15 from the field, while Malone went 7 for 8 from the field and 8 for 10 from the line.  Both teams put five in double figures, with Brett Snodgrass taking game-high honors with 26.  Adam Hill added 20 points and 11 assists, Eric Ferrell scored 19, David Porter had 18, and Derek Yoder contributed 11 off the bench.  Jason Hess and Shawn Stead both had 24 points to lead the Pioneers.  The loss drops the Foresters to 14-6 on the season.  As a side note, Porter reached another career milestone during the game.  His 18 points give him exactly 2000 for his career.  He joins three other HC greats in reaching the 2000 point plateau, Coach Steve Platt (3700, 1970-74), Jeff Shepherd (2565, 1995-99), and Gabe LaGrange (2191, 1996-00). 12/28-29/01

In Friday night's contest, the Foresters convincingly disposed of Durham College 91-42, but fell prey to the undefeated Oilers of the University of Findlay in Saturday's matchup.  Findlay's 53% shooting and dominance on the boards (48-36) coupled with HC's 18 turnovers led to the Foresters' demise.  The Oiler's Tony Hiser took game-high honors scoring 17 points.  David Porter had 14 points on 6 of 15 shooting for HC.  In Friday night's game, Porter again led the way for the Foresters with 24 points and 10 rebounds.  Brett Snodgrass chipped in 20, while Derek Yoder and Justin Riegsecker had 13 and 11 points respectively.   Nelson Louro led Durham with 19 points.  The Foresters are now 13-5 on the season and 1-0 in the conference.  As a side note, junior Brett Snodgrass became a member of the 1000 Point Club during the Findlay game and now stands with 1003 career points, which set him above Jeff Miller (1002 points, 1990-94) in 27th place. Porter Lifts HC to Win
11/17/01

When David Porter made the decision to continue with the season rather than red-shirt, he left no doubt that his decision was the right one as he led the Foresters to a 75-67 win over Tri-State University.  Porter scored 11 straight points to open the game and finished with a game-high 32 points and eight rebounds. HC ran out to a 42-29 half-time led and then went cold in the second half going 7 for 22 from the field and allowing the Thunder to climb back into the game.  Tri-State was within three with three minutes remaining when Derek Yoder hit a shot from beyond the arc to put the Foresters back up by six, ending the Thunder's run.  Ryan Thwaits was the only other Forester to reach double figures with 11.  The Thunder was led by Jon Gates 20 points. With the win, the men improve to 3-3 on the season.  Porter's 32 points gives him 1735 career points which ties him for seventh place with Mark Parker on HC's all-time scoring list.  He needs 74 points to reach Steve Younce's (1970-74) total of 1809 points. Forester Road Woes Continue
11/14/01

The road continues to be unkind to the Foresters as they traveled to Purdue University Calumet and lost 77-71.  Although HC out-rebounded the Lakers and had 7 fewer turnovers, it wasn't enough to overcome their cold 29% shooting for the game.  Four starters (Hill, Porter, Riegsecker, and Hall) shot a combined 20% from the field, going 7 for 35.  Despite shooting 28% in the first half, the Foresters still managed to take a four point lead into the locker room at the half, but for the third time this season, were unable to make the lead stick. HC's shooting improved little in the second half (31%), but the Lakers got hot.  They out-scored HC 46-36 on 61% shooting to seal the win.  For the game, the Foresters were  led by Brett Snodgrass who had 18 points and 2 assists.  David Porter and Ryan Thwaits also reached double figures scoring 16 and 14 respectively.  The Lakers were led by Ryan Sexson's 18 points.  The loss drops the men to 2-3 on the season. Back in the friendly confines of the Merillat Complex, the Foresters returned to their winning ways with a convincing 106-87 rout of Indiana Tech.  HC used some hot shooting (72%) in the first half to build a 60-39 lead and never looked back.  The Foresters put four in double figures for the game with David Porter taking game high honors with 23 points.  Eric Ferrell had a great all-around game with 22 points on 7 of 9 shooting, 9 rebounds and a steal.  Brett Snodgrass added 21 points, while Adam Hill finished with 14 points, 7 assists, and 3 steals.  The Warriors were led by Tiras Smith's 20 points.  The win brings the Foresters back even at 2-2 on the season. Foresters Lose to St. Xavier
11/10/01

The Forester defense gave up 55 second half points to St. Xavier, which led to their 96-84 loss.  After being held to 41 point in the first half, the Cougars scorched the nets in the second half, hitting 20 of 37 shot attempts, to take control of the game.  The Foresters also lost the battle of the boards being out-rebounded 41-29.  HC was led by David Porter's 24 points and 9 rebounds.   With the starting guards shooting a combined 4-17 from the floor, HC needed some help from its bench.  Derek Yoder stepped up and scored 13, while Marcus Hall went 5-6 from the floor for 10 points.  Keith Hampton of St. Xavier led all scorers with 30 points.  With the loss, the Foresters drop to 1-2 on the season.  Porter's 24 points gives him 1664 for his career, moving him past Kent Paul (1963-66) into tenth place on HC's All-time Scoring list.  He needs 6 points to surpass Doug Carver (1973-74, 76-79) to move up to ninth.  Box scores...

Foresters Fall to Urbana
11/6/01

The Forester's two-point halftime lead was not quite enough to secure their first road win of the season as they fell 99-97 to Urbana University.  It was a closely fought game that saw both squads put all five starters in double figures, but the difference in the game was the Blue Knights sharp shooting.  Urbana connected on 36 of their 64 field goal attempts for a 56.3 percentage, while the Foresters shoot 46.9% (30-64) from the field.  HC was led in scoring by  senior, David Porter's 24 points and junior Brett Snodgrass' 20 points.  Rob Sichina had 22 points to lead Urbana.  The loss drops the Foresters to 1-1 on the season.  For a complete game boxscore, click here.

Foresters Win Season Opener
11/3/01

The house was packed in anticipation of the Forester's first game of the season, and the men did not disappoint defeating Cedarville University 95-84.  Prior to the game, there were questions concerning the playing status of NAIA 1st Team All-American, David Porter, who would be playing in his first game since having reconstructive knee surgery in July.  About midway through the second half, many questions were answered when Porter had a spectacular finish of an alley-oop dunk that ignited the crowd.  Porter played a solid 35 minutes and finished with 18 points and 6 rebounds.  HC was led by Adam Hill's fantastic all-around game.  He scored 22 points on 9-11 shooting, collected 7 rebounds, dished out 6 assists, and had 3 steals.  Cedarville was led by Josh Gast's 23 points and 6 rebounds.  With the win, the Foresters are 1-0 on the season.  For a complete game boxscore, click here.
