Marian Hands HC First MCC Loss A poor shooting
performance by the 5th-ranked Foresters gave the Marian College Knights the
edge they needed to pull off the 79-67 upset and hand HC its first MCC loss
of the season. The Knights' match-up zone forced the Foresters to the
perimeter where they had a difficult time finding their range. HC shot
just 40% from the field for the game and were just 5-23 from behind the arc
for 22%. On the flip-side, Marian's shooters had the hot hand going
25-46 from the field for 54% and 6-13 from downtown for 46%. Marian grabbed
an early 14-6 lead, but the Foresters battled back to take an 18-17 lead
with just under eight minutes left in the half. Marian took back the lead at
21-20 on a pair of free throws by Tim Adams and never gave it up. HC's Kyle
Ganton cut the lead to 29-26 just before the half, but Marian hit three of
their four free throws in the final seconds of the half for the 32-26 lead.
In the second half, the Foresters kept within striking distance early, but a
15-6 Knight run that gave Marian a 69-52 advantage with 3:32 left in game
effectively put the game out of reach. Three Foresters scored in
double digits with Alex Kock and Kyle Ganton scoring 12 apiece while Doug
Sheckler added 11. Adams took game-high honors for the Knights with
his 20 points and Jordan Dever added 19. The loss drops HC to 12-6 on

HC Wins Double OT Thriller In a match-up between two NAIA heavyweights, it only seems fitting that it would require two extra periods to determine a winner. The NAIA Division II 7th-ranked Huntington College Foresters (12-5) outlasted 3rd-ranked Cedarville University (13-3) to earn the 84-81 upset in a double overtime thriller. Huntington built a 12-point lead with just under five minutes left in the first half and headed to the locker room with a 38-28 lead. The Yellow Jackets stepped up their defense in the second half and held the Foresters to just 25 points. Cedarville had its biggest lead of the half at 57-51 with 5:22 to play and were up 63-60 with 1:46 after a Ryan Short free throw. On Huntington’s next possession, Adam Bontreger was left open at the top and knocked down his only field goal of the game, a 3-pointer to knot the score at 63-63. Both defenses held over the final 1:46 to send the game to its first extra period. Two minutes into the first overtime, Huntington’s Jared Yoder hit a layup to give the Foresters a six-point cushion, but again the Yellow Jacket defense responded, holding Huntington scoreless for the final three minutes of the period. An old-fashion 3-point play by Cedarville’s Jason Weakley with :26 showing on the clock gave the Yellow Jackets new life by tying the score at 71-71. Alex Kock’s shot at the buzzer fell short forcing the game to a second overtime. Huntington again took the early lead. Steve Snider hit two free throws to give the Foresters a 77-72 advantage with just under three minutes to play. Cedarville responded with a 6-1 run to tie it at 78 all with a minute to play. After using most of the shot clock on the next possession, Huntington’s Yoder missed a jumper just inside the lane, but teammate Doug Sheckler came up with a big offensive rebound that led to a Kock baseline jumper and an 80-78 lead for the Foresters. Kock was then fouled going for a defensive rebound after a Cedarville miss. Kock drained both free throws to put Huntington up four with :17 left in the game. The Yellow Jackets pushed the ball up the floor and Guy Rathmell immediately knocked down a trey to cut it to 82-81. Cedarville again sent Kock to the line and he calmly sank both to put the Foresters up 84-81. A last second 3-point attempt by Cedarville’s Short missed everything. Kock finished the game with a game-high 35 points. He went 12-22 from the floor and 10-13 from the line. Yoder and Sheckler each added 14. Thomas Mugabe led three Yelllow Jackets in double figures with 21 and a game-high 17 rebounds. The Foresters will be back in action at 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday, January 4, when they travel to Marian College to resume conference play. Box Score

Survive Against USF The Foresters survived a lackluster first half and a feisty St. Francis squad to win 71-65 for their fifth victory in a row. The Fighting Saints jumped out to a 6-0 lead on two treys and were able to maintain a 3-8 point advantage for the entire half until HC's Kyle Ganton hit a 3-pointer with a 1:05 left to earn the first tie of the game at 29-29. The two teams traded misses to end the half. The game remained close six minutes into the second half with HC up 38-37 when the Foresters scored 10 unanswered points to give themselves a little breathing room. USF responded with a 17-5 run to reclaim the lead at 54-53 with just under six minutes to play. An Alex Kock layup sandwiched between two Doug Sheckler free throws and a field goal gave the Foresters a 59-54 lead with 3:44 remaining, but the Fighting Saints weren't going away. USF cut it to two twice including a 67-65 deficit with :15 left on the clock, but Ganton and Sheckler each hit two from the stripe to seal the win. Kock lead all scorers in the game with 21 points and added eight rebounds. Sheckler and Ganton each finished with 14 and Steve Snider added 11. Down 28-20 with seven minutes to play in the half, HC needed someone to step up. Sheckler answered the call scoring seven of the Foresters' next nine points over the next minute and a half of play to help HC reclaim the lead at 29-28. Grace immediately took back the lead with a Joe Saunder's basket, but Sheckler responded with another field goal to give the Foresters the lead for good. HC held a 40-35 edge at the break and never allowed the Lancers any closer than three the remainder of the game. In the second half, Sheckler continued to dominate adding 18 points to his 11 in the opening period. For the game, the Foresters were able to overcome 20 offensive rebounds by Grace with their 51% to 39% advantage in shooting and five fewer turnovers (13-18). The win gives the Foresters a 10-4 record overall and a perfect 4-0 start in MCC play. Box Score HC Stays
Unbeaten In MCC Although the NAIA Division II 3rd-ranked Foresters like a more up-tempo style of play, they proved they could win a physical, slower paced, defensive battle as well with their 53-48 victory over MCC rival, Taylor University. Play got off to a slow start for both teams, but the Trojans owned an 11-6 lead six minutes into the game when Coach Platt inserted Jared Yoder into the lineup. Yoder scored nine of the Foresters' next 13 points on three long bombs to help jumpstart HC's offense and give them a 19-15 lead with just under nine minutes left in the half. Taylor's defense re-grouped and held the Foresters to just one field goal the rest of the half allowing the Trojans to take a 23-21 lead at the break. The offensive struggle continued into the second half with neither team able to build a significant lead. With the score tied at 39-39 with 8:28 on the clock, HC's Kyle Ganton connected on his second trey of the game to give the Foresters the lead for good. Taylor's Mike Parson hit a layup to pull the Trojan's back within one, but two Ganton free throws and layup from Snider gave HC a little breathing room with a 46-41 lead. Taylor's Eric Ford hit a quick jumper to make it 46-43, but the Trojans would get no closer down the stretch as HC got a layup and a thunderous dunk from Doug Sheckler and 3-4 free throws from Steve Snider to seal the win. Jared Yoder and Steve Snider both led the Foresters with 12 points each and Doug Sheckler and Kyle Ganton contributed 11 and 10 points respectively.
