8.27-28.04The Foresters
opened their season at the Judson College Tournament on the weekend by facing
the NAIA preseason 10th-ranked Mid-Continent College Cougars and fell 6-0.
The Cougars immediately took control of the game scoring four goals in the
first half. The Foresters did a better job of containing the Cougars in
the second half, but still allowed two additional goals and could not find
the back of the net themselves. "Their skill and technical ability
dominated us today," said Coach Lawson. "We had a better
showing in the second half once we committed ourselves to winning some of the
physical challenges."
In
their second game of the tournament, the Foresters faced the Walsh University
Cavaliers and came away with a thrilling 2-1 come-from-behind victory to earn
the split on the weekend. Walsh got on the board first with an early
goal, but went down a man when a player received a red card.
HC took advantage and controlled the pace of the game, generating 14
shots on goal, but couldn’t finish.
Freshman Joel Sanders finally broke through with a great run and
delivered the equalizer with three minutes remaining in the match.
Then, with five seconds left to play, Sanders delivered a pass behind
the defense to David Callahan who netted the winning goal for the Foresters.
“We played spirited from the whistle and it really helped us with
our possession game,” said Coach Lawson. “Courtney
Hamilton was outstanding in goal on the weekend.”
With the split, the Foresters are 1-1 on the season. |
