| 09.26.06 - The
Foresters (4-5-1, 1-1) picked up their first conference win of the
season with an impressive 2-1 victory over a talented Marian College
(9-2, 1-1) squad.
The Knights took an early lead with a
goal 14 minutes into the first half. A few minutes later Marian
generated another quality scoring opportunity on a break away, but HU
keeper, Kevin Keske came up with a huge save to keep it a 1-0 game.
Unfortunately, Keske was injured on the play which forced Coach Lawson
to go to his bench. Freshman Matt Boyer was given the nod and he
stepped up with 10 saves to help secure the win for HU.
The Foresters continued to battle and
were able to get the equalizer before the half. James Holliday
took a pass from Matt Gerlach and rocketed a shot from the top of the
box, which deflected past Marian's keeper with just under five minutes
left in the period.
The second half saw end-to-end action
with the Foresters' Joel Sanders finally breaking the 1-1 tie with
16:51 left in the match. Marvin Martinez sent a pass deep, which
Sanders corralled. He beat his defender and then slipped the
ball past the keeper for the game-winner.
"The guys played exceptional
tonight," said Coach Lawson. "They played with poise which made
all the difference in the world."
The Knights had 13 shots on goal
to just seven for HU and the Forester keepers had 13 saves, Keske with
three and Boyer with 10. |
