Foresters Win Season Opener

The Foresters opened their season this afternoon in the first round of the Huntington Tournament against Concordia College (MI) with a thrilling 3-2 come from behind win. HC took the early lead on a goal by freshman, Luke Caldwell with a nice assist from sophomore, Denis Dreni. Concordia tied the game on a penalty kick by Andrew Steech to end the scoring in the first half. With 20 minutes to go in the game, Concordia took a 2-1 lead on a direct kick by Bradley Smith. The Foresters then turned up the heat and rallied to score two goals in ten minutes. With 15 minutes to play, Luke Caldwell took the ball up the sideline and centered it beautifully. It was a perfect pass to senior, Matt Taylor, who headed the ball in on the run. HC stayed on the attack and had several more shots on goal before sophomore, Jeff Edgel, put them ahead for good on an assist from Jordan Phillips with five minutes to play.

With their win, the Foresters will take on Greenville College in the championship game tomorrow, Saturday, September 8 at 3:00 p.m.

Foresters Claim Tournament Title

As the first half was drawing to a close, it looked as if the teams would head to their locker rooms in a scoreless tie.  The Foresters had a different thought in mind and took advantage of a late opportunity.  With :39 remaining in the first half, freshman, Phil Lamb scored on an assist from fellow classman, Luke Caldwell, for the only goal that the Foresters would need for the win and the Huntington College tournament title.   The 1-0 win raises the men's record to 2-0 on the season.  Freshman Luke Caldwell who scored a goal and assisted on two others was named the tournament offensive MVP and Greenville goalkeeper, Steve Moore, was the tournament defensive MVP.

Pilots Hand Foresters First Loss

For 55 minutes, the Foresters hung with last season's MCC champions, Bethel College.  After battling to a scoreless tie at the half, the Pilots Manuel Leal  was finally able to put one in the net with 35 minutes remaining when the ball bounced around in front of the goal following a corner kick.  The goal seemed to deflate the Foresters as Bethel went on to score three more goals to hand the Foresters their first loss of the season 4-0.  In the second half, the Pilots turned up their defensive pressure and made it difficult for HC to mount an attack.  Although the loss is a disappointment, Coach DeCou looks for the team to learn from it and be a better team because of it.  The Foresters fall to 2-1 on the season and 0-1 in the conference.

Forester Youth Shows in Loss

"Our youth is being exposed, but we will learn from this week", says Coach DeCou.  The Foresters again played well for 60 minutes before having a couple lapses that put them in a hole they couldn't overcome.    Taylor got on the board with 25 minutes remaining on an unassisted goal by James Hornaday and went on to score two more goals to defeat the Foresters 3-0.  With the loss, HC falls to 2-2 on the season and 0-2 in the conference.

Foresters Dominate Bluffton

Freshman Luke Caldwell's first career hat trick put the Bluffton College Beavers away for good and lifted the Foresters to a 6-0 win.  HC took the lead on Josh Boehr's goal with an assist from Tim Caldwell about midway through the first half.  Phil Lamb scored about seven minutes later on an assist from Matt Taylor, and Tim Caldwell scored on a penalty kick to end the scoring in the first half.  In the second half, Luke Caldwell got an assist from his brother, Tim, on his first goal and scored the other two unassisted.  Goalkeepers, Jeremy Rufener and Andre Laird, combined for HC's second shutout of the season.  The Foresters improve to 3-2 on the season.

Foresters Get First MCC Win

Two second half goals helped secure the men's first conference win of the season.  The Foresters dug themselves a hole by allowing Goshen's Todd Pletcher to score on a corner kick just nine minutes into the contest.  Despite HC's sloppy play in the first half, the Maple Leafs could do no further damage.  At halftime, the Foresters regrouped and picked up the pace in the second half.  With 25 minutes left in the game, junior Casey Cherry broke through to score his first goal of the season on an assist from Matt Taylor.  Ten minutes later, freshman Drew Aukerman scored the game-winning goal on an assist from Phil Lamb.  Jeremy Rufener recorded nine saves in the game.  The 2-1 win boosts the Forester's record to 4-2 on the season and 1-2 in the conference.

Foresters Fall to 4-3

The Foresters traveled to Brescia University and fell 2-1 to the Bearcats.   The two teams battled to a 0-0 tie at the half.  With 20 minutes left in the game, Marc Cameron scored his first goal of the season on an assist from Jeremy Rufener.  Ten minutes later, Brescia scored to tie the match on an unassisted goal by Gustavo Garcia.  Garcia scored the game-winning goal on an assist from Durand Engineer in the final minute of play.  "Our effort Saturday night was magnificent, but we must learn to finish off a strong opponent," said Coach DeCou.  The Foresters fall to 4-3 on the season.

HC Drops To 1-3 in MCC

Despite a solid effort, the Foresters were handed their third conference loss 0-1 by the IWU Wildcats.  IWU scored the game's only goal on a corner kick with 18 minutes left in the first half.  After the goal, the team regrouped but could not find the back of the net.  "I am very pleased with the progress we are making.  We deserved at least a tie tonight," said Coach DeCou.  With the loss the men drop to 4-4 on the season and 1-3 in the conference.

HC Edge Marian 1-0

Casey Cherry's second goal of the season was all the Foresters needed to get their second conference win defeating Marian College 1-0.  Having gone a week without a match, HC got off to a slow start.  As the first half wore on, they picked up their intensity level and scored the only goal of the game on a rebound off of a corner kick with three minutes left in the half.  Solid defense in the second half helped the Foresters close out the match for their third shutout win.  With the win, the men move to 5-4 on the season and 2-3 in the conference.

Foresters Win in Overtime

The large Homecoming crowd got their money's worth and then some as the Foresters rallied to win their first overtime game in three years defeating Tri-State University 3-2.  Jonathan Palma headed in the game-winning goal on an assist from Casey Cherry six minutes into the second overtime period.  "We completely dominated the overtime," said Coach DeCou.  "Our hard work and perseverance paid off.  It was a great team effort as we battled our way back twice."

Tri-State took the early lead on a goal by Niclas Hulting in the 25th minute of the match.  Early in the second half, HC knotted the score at one on a goal by Greg Powell, the first of his career.  TSU took the lead again with under ten minutes to play in regulation, but the Foresters did not quit and evened the score at two on a goal by Luke Caldwell to send them into the overtime period.  The Foresters out shot the Thunder 22-9 and Jeremy Rufener had seven saves in goal for HC.  The win raises their record to 6-4 on the season.

Foresters Take Out Defiance

Two second half goals helped the Foresters to their seventh win of the season beating Defiance College 2-0.  The Yellow Jackets came out very defensive-minded, continually putting 9 men behind the ball.  Although the Foresters out shot Defiance 13-3 in the first half, the match remained scoreless at the midpoint.  In the second half, HC turned up the offensive pressure by putting 20 shots on goal.  The Foresters got on the board 14 minutes into the second half with a goal by Luke Caldwell off an assist from Casey Cherry.  HC put Defiance away with a goal by Greg Powell on an assist from Luke Caldwell with 15 minutes left in the match.  The Forester's 33 shots on goal is the most by an HC squad in five years.  With the win, the men are 7-4 on the season.

Foresters Knock Off St. Francis

Freshman Phil Lamb scored two goals to lift the Foresters over St. Francis 2-1.  The win gives HC their eighth on the season and pulled them even in the conference at 3-3.  Although the game was played in less than ideal conditions, Lamb was able to finish on two easy chances in the second half, and the defense, led by Tim Caldwell, did the rest.  Jeremy Rufener's penalty kick save in the 80th minute was vital as Mark Sabino scored  five minutes later for the Cougars.  "Our defense did a great job," said Coach DeCou. "On a day like today, defenders normally slip and slide everywhere, but we were able to keep our feet under us and thwart most of USF's attacks."  The men are now 8-4 on the season.

Foresters Get Fifth Shutout of Season

After playing  75 minutes in very sloppy conditions, the Foresters finally got on the board against Moody Bible Institute and went on to win 3-0.  Luke Caldwell scored the Foresters first goal on an assist from Jonathan Palma.  It took just 45 seconds to get their second when Greg Powell put a nice move on the goalkeeper and found the back of the net.  The third goal came in the final minute of play when Luke Caldwell took a shot at the net and Marc Cameron deflected the ball enough to change its path so that it got by the goalkeeper.  Coach Decou credited the win to the strong midfield play of Jonathan Palma and Jordan Phillips.  "They dictated tempo and held the ball well in very sloppy conditions."  Jeremy Rufener's three saves helped the team earn their fifth shutout of the season.  With the win, the men improve to 9-4 on the season and are now ranked fifth in Region VIII behind Bethel College, Aquinas College, Siena Heights University, and Taylor University.

Foresters Improve to 10-4

Playing in their fourth game in seven days, the Foresters were sluggish, but played well enough to get a 2-1 win over Indiana Tech.  Casey Cherry scored an unassisted goal just ten minutes into the game and then set up Greg Powell for his fourth goal on the season early in the second half to take a 2-0 lead.  The Warriors goal came with eight minutes to play when HC's Noel Moreno tried to clear an Indiana Tech shot and accidentally knocked into the Warrior's goal.  With the win, the Foresters improve to 10-4 on the season, making it  the first season since 1993 that an HC soccer team hit double-digits in the win column.

Grace Ends Forester's Winning Streak

The Foresters were not able to get their offense on track and fell to Grace College 2-0.  The two teams battled to a scoreless tie at the half, but Grace's Jean Desouza scored two unassisted goals in the second half and dashed HC's hopes of hosting a conference tournament game.  "The conditions were not ideal, but we were never able to get it going today," said Coach DeCou.  "We will learn from our mistakes and prepare for the upcoming conference tourney."  The loss ended the Forester's six-game winning streak and dropped them to 10-5 on the season and 3-4 in the conference.

HC Falls to ONU

The Foresters couldn't capitalize on Olivet Nazarene mistakes and consequently fell 1-0 to the Tigers.  ONU scored the only goal of the game on a flip throw-in.  HC goalkeeper Jeremy Rufener was unable to hang onto the throw as he went up in traffic on the save attempt and  Tiger Edward Anderson knocked the loose ball into the net.  The loss drops the men to 10-6 on the season.  After losing their last two, the Foresters are looking forward to their match with Manchester to help them get back on track as they head into conference tournament play on the weekend.  The match with Manchester that had been scheduled for Wednesday this week has been moved up to tomorrow (Tuesday) at 3:30 p.m. due to a Manchester scheduling problem.  Pairings for the MCC men's soccer tournament have been set.  First round matchups are as follows: #1 seed Bethel College will host #8 seed Goshen College, #2 Taylor University will host #7 Marian College, #3 University of St. Francis will host #6 Huntington College, and Grace and Indiana Wesleyan play each other this week to determine which will be the #4 seed and play host to the other.

HC Shuts Out Manchester

The Foresters closed out their regular season with a 3-0 win over Manchester College.  Tim Caldwell got HC on the board with an unassisted goal 20 minutes into the game.  Not to be outdone by his big brother, Luke Caldwell netted the Forester's second goal on an assist from Jonathan Palma with two minutes left in the first half, and scored an unassisted goal five minutes into the second half to seal the win.  Goalkeeper Jeremy Rufener had two critical saves to preserve the Forester's sixth shutout of the season.  With the win, HC improves to 11-6 on the season and move on to postseason play this Saturday.   The Foresters will travel to the University of St. Francis for their first round matchup in the MCC Tournament.  The time has not yet been determined.

Caldwell Receives MCC Honors

Freshman Luke Caldwell, received MCC All-Conference honors this season.  Caldwell scored nine goals and had five assists for the Foresters this season.
