Cougars
Outlast HC The Cougars of St. Francis and
the Foresters battled for 106 minutes before the Cougars finally put one
in the net to end HC's season. The Foresters, the #8 seed in the MCC
tournament, had to face the #1-seeded Cougars, but gave them all they
could handle through regulation and one overtime before giving up the only
goal of the game in the second overtime period. "The parity in
the conference was most evident by today's result," said Coach DeCou.
"We weren't your ordinary #8 seed. I told the guys all the
pressure was on USF and we came out and relaxed and played with such
determination and passion. We had several opportunities but just
couldn't find the back of the net." HC and St. Francis both had
nine shot on goal. Forester goalkeeper Courtney Hamilton, who
received First Team MCC All-Conference honors, had seven saves in the
match. "The winning goal was a scrappy effort by USF.
They played well and I wish them the best of luck. I feel, though,
that we should be playing on Wednesday. It's been a great season .
We responded well to a slow start and I'm not ready for this year to be
over." The men finish their season with a record of 8-9-2. Foresters
Down Moody The Foresters closed out their regular season schedule with a 3-1 win over Moody Bible Institute. Paulo Moniz got HC on the board early when he headed home a pass from Jonathan Palma in the seventh minute of play. Luke Caldwell netted the Foresters' second goal of the half, on a header off a pass from Andrew Hulfish. Fifteen minutes into the second half, Moniz extended HC's lead to 3-0 when he again headed in a pass, this time from Marc Cameron. Moody scored one in the 71st minute, but could get no closer. "Our midfield did a great job of dictating the tempo and pace of the game," said Coach DeCou. "It was a scrappy performance and we worked hard to earn a victory on senior day." The men conclude their regular season with an 8-8-2 record and will travel to the University of St. Francis on Saturday, November 1 for first round play in the Mid-Central Conference tournament. The game is set to start at 12:00 p.m. Another
Tie For HC A Spartan goal in the 72nd minute drew Manchester College even at 2-2 with the Foresters, but neither team could produce a game-winner through the remainder of regulation and two overtime periods resulting in a tie. It was the third straight overtime game for the Foresters and their second tie in a row. Paulo Moniz started the scoring for HC, taking a pass from Phil Lamb and depositing it in the net at the 12 minute mark. Manchester evened the score with a goal in the 39th minute to make it 1-1 at the half. Early in the second half, the Foresters regained the lead when Lamb connected on a goal of his own with an assist from Luke Caldwell. HC's defense worked hard but couldn't keep the Spartans from equalizing the game. "The entire team did a good job today, having a short recovery time," said Coach DeCou. "We showed a great spirit and determination. We could have used Tuesday as an excuse, but we battled and created opportunities at the end of regulation and overtime. We are playing well and these results will benefit us for the tournament." The tie gives the Foresters a 7-8-2 record for the season. Foresters
Tie Marian The Foresters put together one of their best performances of the season and came away with a 1-1 tie with the Marian College Knights. Luke Caldwell gave HC the lead with an unassisted goal nine minutes into the game. The Foresters kept up the pressure, but were unable to capitalize on any more scoring opportunities in the half. In the second half, the Knights went on the attack, but Courtney Hamilton came up with several outstanding stops to keep Marian out of the net. Only an own goal in the 64th minute kept HC from recording the win. In the overtime period, both teams created a few scoring chances, but both defenses held firm. "We are starting to play with an attitude and belief in ourselves," said Coach DeCou. "These past two overtime matches will be a positive as we look to the conference tournament. We feel we can play with and beat anybody." The men's record now stands at 7-8-1 on the season and 1-5-1 in the MCC. HC
Gets OT Win The Foresters needed just eight minutes in the overtime period to net the game-winner and pick up the 2-1 win on the road over Rochester College. After playing to a scoreless tie in the first half, the Foresters finally took the lead on a Luke Caldwell goal in the 60th minute. Rochester got the equalizer with just eight minutes left in regulation, but neither team could connect again before the final horn. In the extra period, HC immediately went on the attack, and in the 98th sealed the victory when Phil Lamb knocked in a pass from Caldwell. For the game, the Foresters outshot Rochester 11-6 and HC's Courtney Hamilton recorded 5 saves. The win raises their record to 7-8 on the season. Foresters
Fall Prey to Wildcats Playing in their only night game of the season, the Foresters had trouble getting their act together and fell 4-1 to Indiana Wesleyan University. The Wildcats went on the attack early scoring their first goal eight minutes into the game and added three more before Matt Gerlach finally netted one for HC in the 74th minute. Luke Caldwell was credited with the assist. "We didn't play well tonight," said Coach DeCou. "We gave up too many good scoring chances and the chances we created, we didn't capitalize on." The loss drops the men to 6-8 on the season and 1-5 in the conference. HC
Outlasts Franklin Two goals in the first thirty minutes of the match quieted a rowdy Franklin College Homecoming crowd and were enough to give the Foresters the 2-1 win. Phil Lamb netted his first goal of the season from an indirect kick in the seventh minute. Denis Dreni picked up the assist on the play. Then Marc Cameron got the game-winner in the 28th minute from a penalty kick. In the second half, the Grizzlies went on the attack and cut the lead in half with a goal in the 58th minute, but the Forester defense denied every attempt to get the equalizer. "Both our goals came off set pieces," said Coach DeCou. "We haven't been that successful in that area this year. It was good to get a couple of goals the way we did." With the win, their second on the week, the men move to 6-7 on the season. Foresters
Get MCC Win Solid play from the midfield and defense led to the Foresters' first conference victory of the season, a 1-0 win over Goshen College. The win also enabled HC to avenge its 3-2 overtime loss to the Maple Leafs a year ago. Both teams were scoreless until Paulo Moniz took a pass from Josh Wood and put it an the back of the net, scoring his eighth goal of the season. "The guys showed great spirit and determination today," said Coach DeCou. "We can go on a nice run to finish the year and prepare for conference if we play as we did today." The Foresters out-shot Goshen 10-3 and held a 6-1 advantage in corner kicks. Courtney Hamilton recorded three saves in the match for HC. The win raises the men's record to 5-7 on the season and 1-4 in the MCC. Asbury
Tops HC The Foresters' poor second half performance led to a disappointing 3-1 Homecoming loss to Asbury College. HC went on the attack early and was rewarded with a Seth Caldwell goal just eight minutes into the match. Unfortunately, that was the only successful finish for the Foresters on the day. Asbury got the equalizer in the opening minutes of the second half, but two Eagle goals in the final five minutes of the game put the game out of reach for HC. "We played a great first half," said Coach DeCou. "Our midfield won every 50/50 ball, organized and executed attacks flawlessly. The second half was the complete opposite. We couldn't do anything we wanted. We must build on the positives and learn from the negatives." The loss drops the men to 4-7 on the season. Foresters
Blank Davenport Solid defense and good enough offense lifted the Foresters to a 3-0 shutout over Davenport University, marking their second win in a row and third in their last four contests. HC took the early lead on an unassisted goal by Paulo Moniz just seven minutes into the match, but couldn't connect again the remainder of the half. The Foresters picked up their pressure in the second half. They created several good chances and finally got their second goal when Moniz netted his second goal of the day off a Jonathan Palma assist. A penalty kick by Luke Caldwell with six minutes left in the game completed HC's scoring. "We're happy to get a victory, but we're not satisfied with our performance," said Coach DeCou. "We created some opportunities, but didn't finish them like we wanted. The guys will bounce back and put on a good show for Homecoming." The win gives the men a 4-6 record on the season. Moniz
Delivers Game-Winner Paulo Moniz's goal with eleven minutes to go lifted the Foresters to a 2-1 victory over Hanover College for their third win of the season. Marc Cameron scored his first goal of the season just before the half to give HC the 1-0 lead. Midway through the second half, Hanover evened the score, until Luke Caldwell found Moniz for the game-winner. "Trying to make sure we had the same intensity as we played with on Wednesday, we did a great job of absorbing pressure and creating good chances, said Coach DeCou. " The Bethel game took a lot out of us, but we bounced back and got a good result against a good team." The win raise the men's record to 3-6 on the season. Short-handed
HC Falls to Bethel Freshman Seth Caldwell scored seven minutes into the game to give the Foresters the early lead, but a red card at the 27 minute mark put them down a player and gave the Bethel College Pilots the edge they needed to pick up the 4-2 win. Bethel got some additional help from HC to tie the game at one apiece when goalkeeper, Courtney Hamilton, mishandled a ball into his own net. The Pilots netted a second goal to take the 2-1 lead at the half. Six minutes into the second half, the short-handed Foresters battled back to tie the score at 2-2 on an unassisted goal by Luke Caldwell. Bethel regained the lead for good five minutes later and put the game out of reach with a fourth goal in the 70th minute. "We could have hung out head when we went a man down, but we were unlucky and unable to finish our chances," said Coach DeCou. "If we play with the fight and intensity with eleven players for 90 minutes, we will put together a good streak to get us ready for playoffs." The loss drops the men to 2-6 on the season and 0-4 in the MCC. Foresters
Pick up Win The men's soccer team played its most consistent match of the year to pick up the 2-1 win over Olivet College. Paulo Moniz scored five minutes into the game to give the Foresters the early lead, but the Comets were able to even the score with four minutes left in the half. Second half play went back and forth until Moniz gave HC the lead for good off an assist from Luke Caldwell. Forester goalkeeper, Courtney Thompson, made a couple of big saves at the end as Olivet threw numbers forward to try to get the equalizer. "We changed tactics today due to three guys being out with injuries," said Coach DeCou. "We did a good job of keeping our shape and defending for most the match." The win raises the men's record to 2-5 on the season. HC
Shutout at Grace The Foresters and the Lancers of Grace College played to a scoreless tie at the half, but with the help of a couple favorable bounces, Grace was able to net two in the second half to knock off HC 2-0. As has been the problem for the Foresters early in the season, they were able to generate some good chances, but failed to finish. "Our problem isn't a matter of attitude and effort, it's execution," said Coach DeCou. "We aren't consistent for 90 minutes. We are improving and getting better. The problem is we can't be satisfied with 'moral victories'." Grace out-shot the Foresters 8-6, while both goalkeepers recorded six saves. "Courtney Hamilton continues to shine," said DeCou. "Without his solid presence in the net, things could be worse. He is the one consistent performer." With the loss, the Foresters fall to 1-5 on the season and 0-3 in the MCC. Foresters
Post First Win Paulo Moniz scored the lone goal of the game with an assist from Denis Dreni to give HC its first win of the season. The Foresters held the ball well and created several good scoring chances, but were only able to capitalize once. Fortunately, one was all that was needed. "A players-only meeting on Wednesday followed by two of the best practices of the year leading up to today was what led to our very good performance," said Coach DeCou. "We decided that the year starts today and we gave a great effort. No one was spectacular today, we had a great collective effort and put in a very good performance." HC recorded nine shots on goal to Malone's four, and Forester goalkeeper, Courtney Hamilton, kept the shutout intact with his four saves. The win raises the men's record to 1-4 on the season. HC
Still Looking For First Win The Cougars of St. Francis scored just six minutes into the game and cruised to the 2-0 win over the Foresters. Poor passing and too many turnovers kept HC from mounting attacks. The Foresters managed just two shots on goal while the Cougars tallied 20. "We have to quit beating ourselves," said Coach DeCou. "USF did a fine job, but we didn't execute as we are capable. There's a lot of season left, but we can't panic. We need to sort out our trouble quickly." The loss leaves the 0-4 Foresters still looking for their first win. HC
Falls to 0-3 The Foresters held a 1-0 lead at the half, but couldn't make it stand, falling 3-1 to Urbana University. Defensive lapses and erratic passing in the second half led to HC's demise. "We failed to hold possession in the second half," said Coach DeCou. "We were unorganized with our defending and our passing wasn't what it should have been in the second half." Luke Caldwell scored the Foresters' loan goal with some nice one-on-one work in the 36th minute. The loss drops the men to 0-3 on the season. HC
Comes Up Short At Taylor The Foresters and the Trojans of Taylor University combined for three goals in the second half, but it was HC that came up short, falling 2-1 in its MCC opener. Statistically, the match was very even with both teams producing 20 shots on goal, both goalkeepers tallying 12 saves, and HC having a 6-5 edge on corner kicks. It was a couple of costly turnovers that became the difference in the game. "The team showed great fight and spirit today," said Coach DeCou. "We're not where we want to be, but we are making strides in the right direction." The men fall to 0-2 on the season and 0-1 in the MCC. Foresters
Fall 1-0 in Opener It was a tale of two halves as the Foresters fell 1-0 to Indiana Tech in their season opener. In the first half, the Foresters appeared tentative, which allowed the Warriors to control the midfield and create some good scoring chances. The lone goal of the game came when HC allowed Indiana Tech to penetrate too far and a shot deflected off Forester Jeff Edgel into the net with 32 minutes gone in the first half. The Foresters, playing with much more passion, dominated play in the second half, out-shooting the Warriors 13-2, but couldn't get the equalizer. "Overall, we must learn from today that you must play for 90 minutes and not give anything away," said Coach Steve DeCou. "We are still trying to sort out personnel, but we've got a big game with Taylor on Tuesday and need to improve our performance."
