Bethel Ends Foresters' Season 10.30.04 - The NAIA #9-ranked Bethel College Pilots proved too much for the Foresters as they bounced HC from the MCC Tournament with a 3-0 victory. The two teams were in a scoreless battle for most of the first half, but the Pilots finally netted one with 1:45 left in the half. The Foresters were able to put together a few good build-ups from the back, but very few resulted in quality scoring chances. The Pilots put the game away with two additional goals in the second half to bring HC's season to a close at 7-9-2. "Our men played well and showed a lot of heart, the same heart they have been showing all year," said Coach Lawson. "I am truly going to miss this group of gifted young men." NOTE: HC seniors, Courtney Hamilton and Luke Caldwell, were selected to the MCC All-Conference team. Hamilton, the Foresters’ keeper, was a First Team selection and Caldwell was Second Team. Foresters Stay Alive In Tournament 10.28.04 - The eighth-seeded Foresters and ninth-seeded Indiana Wesleyan Wildcats met for the second time this season with an opportunity to continue in the MCC Tournament riding on the outcome. HC rose to the challenge with a 3-1 win, and will now travel to Mishawaka on Saturday to face the top-seeded Bethel College Pilots at 2:00 p.m. Both sides created excellent scoring chances, but it was the Foresters who got on the board first when Ben Gayed netted a header off a feed from Joel Sanders with 20 minutes left in the first half. Six minutes later, Sanders dished his second assist of the day to Andrew Wust who took the pass off his chest, played it to his feet, and then shot it past the Wildcats' keeper to give HC the 2-0 lead. Indiana Wesleyan fought back to within one with a goal in the 34th minute to bring the half-time score to 2-1. Ten minutes into the second half, Sanders was taken down in the box by IWU's keeper. Luke Caldwell's ensuing penalty kick found the back of the net to restore HC's two-goal lead. HC's defense held the Wildcats scoreless the rest of the way. "I am very proud of the boys," said Coach Lawson. "That kind of sustained effort all game was special. They deserved the result and the chance to play Bethel on Saturday." The win moves the Foresters to 7-8-2 on the season. Marian Downs Foresters 10.23.04 - A Marian College goal with 11 minutes left to play gave the Knights a 2-1 lead that the Foresters could not overcome in their final regular season and conference match of the year. From the first whistle, HC took charge and scored four minutes into the match on an Andrew Wust header. After the Foresters scored, Marian picked up the pace to even the play. The Knights got the equalizer with 17 minutes to go in the first half. The score remained 1-1 until Marian’s Justin Ray netted the game-winner late in the second half. “Obviously we are disappointed in the result, but our play was some of the best I have seen all year,” said Coach Lawson. “That is the kind of spirit and composure we need to next week in the postseason.” The Foresters conclude their regular season with a 6-8-2 record and a 2-5-1 record in the MCC. HC tied for seventh in the conference, but received the eighth seed for the postseason tournament. The Foresters will host a “play-in” game against the ninth-seeded Indiana Wesleyan Wildcats on Thursday, October 28th at 2:00 p.m. The winner will then travel to Mishawaka on Saturday to face the top-seeded Pilots of Bethel College. Foresters Get Comeback Win 10.19.04 - Down 2-1 at the half, the Foresters battled back with three second half goals to pick up the 4-2 come-from-behind win over the Indiana Wesleyan Wildcats. Two minutes into the match, IWU took the lead on a shot that appeared to be a cross from the wing, but the wind knocked it down and off the cross bar into the net. Seven minutes later, HC got the equalizer when Matt Gerlach sent a through ball to Joel Sanders for the score. The Wildcats immediately re-gained the lead when the Forester defense didn't clear a ball well and gave IWU a good look. In the second half, Luke Caldwell set up both Adrian Laird and David Callahan for goals midway through the period to take the 3-2 lead, and Callahan sealed the win with his second goal of the match off an assist from Andrew Wust with a minute and a half left to play. HC's keeper, Courtney Hamilton, finished with eight saves on the day including a few amazing stops to hold the Wildcats scoreless in the second half. "This was a promising effort put forth by the men considering the run of close games we have had the past couple weeks," said Coach Lawson. "These men deserve all the credit for their continued fight tonight." With the win, the Foresters improve to 6-7-2 on the season and 2-4-1 in the MCC. HC/Asbury Play To Tie 10.16.04 - Playing in their fourth consecutive overtime match, the Foresters were hoping to put one in the win column, but came away with a 1-1 tie against Asbury College. Asbury opened the scoring four minutes into the game, but HC's Luke Caldwell evened the score with a header off a cross from his brother Seth with nine minutes remaining in the first half. In the second half and both overtime periods, both sides had problems mounting sustained attacks with strong winds playing a factor. The Foresters were able to double up on Asbury's shots on goal at 10-5, but couldn't put another one away. "We will have to come with more spirit in our remaining games, starting this Tuesday against Indiana Wesleyan if we are going to make a move in the conference," said Coach Lawson. The tie gives the men a 5-7-2 record on the season. Grace Steals Victory From HC 10.13.04 - For the third consecutive game, the Foresters found themselves in overtime and lost their sixth one-goal game of the season with their 2-1 defeat to Grace College. Luke Caldwell put HC ahead with a strike off a feed from Joel Sanders in the 69th minute of play. As time wound down, a win seemed within the Foresters' grasp, but the Lancers capitalized on a direct kick with 28 second left in regulation to force the overtime period. Ten minutes into the extra frame, Grace stole the victory with an easy tap in off a scramble. "This is a cruel game especially when we were so close to victory," said Coach Lawson. "The guys are feeling down now, but in time should be pleased with taking this Grace team to OT without four starters for half the game." The loss drops the men to 5-7-1 on the season and 1-4-1 in conference play. Foresters End In Draw 10.9.04 - In a physically and mentally challenging match, the Foresters fought hard and battled the Goshen College Maple Leafs to a scoreless draw. Goshen had the edge in possession, but only out-shot the Foresters 6-5, and HC was able to force the Maple Leaf's keeper into making the same number of quality saves as HC's keeper, Courtney Hamilton. "This match really stretched us to our limits," said Coach Lawson. "We went into the match having men playing with injuries. The heart and will of these men continue to amaze me the way they approach and tackle adversity." With the tie, the Foresters stand at 5-6-1 on the season and 1-3-1 in the MCC. Bethel Outlasts Foresters 10.5.04 - The Foresters took the NAIA 15th-ranked Bethel College Pilots to double-overtime, but eventually gave up the game-winner with 3:25 left in the second extra period to fall 3-2. The Pilots controlled the flow of the game and out-shot HC 16-4. Although the Foresters didn't get many opportunities, Luke Caldwell made the most of his giving HC the 1-0 lead in the seventh minute on a feed from Joel Sanders and putting the team back in front at 2-1 off an assist from Jarrod Bennett two minutes into the second half. HC's lead was short-lived as Bethel evened it up a minute later. The score remained 2-2 until the Pilots finally netted their third goal of the game late in double OT. "Bethel is a composed, technical team," said Coach Lawson. "This is one of the strongest sides I have seen in a while. I am very proud of the collective effort we put forth tonight. It is definitely a game that you come away feeling a little upset because we were so close to pulling off a major upset, but also realize that the positives should serve us well for the remainder of the season." The loss drops the men to 5-6 on the season and 1-3 in the MCC. HC Edges Taylor 10.2.04 - The buzz of a large Homecoming crowd gave the Foresters the edge they needed to pick up their first conference win of the season, a 1-0 decision over Taylor University. The evenly played match saw both teams generate many quality opportunities with both keepers making saves to keep the match scoreless. HC finally broke through with the game-winner with 15 minutes to play when Luke Caldwell recovered a loose ball at the top of Taylor's 18 and sent a bending strike into the back of the net. "Our spirit was great, which enabled us to possess more," said Coach Lawson. "I am pleased with the effort and execution. Whenever you send a big crowd home with a victory, it is a special day." The win evens the men's record at 5-5 and gives them a 1-2 record in conference play. Foresters Lose 2-1 9.29.04 - A lack of intensity gave Spring Arbor University the edge it needed to hand the Foresters a 2-1 loss, their fourth one-goal loss of the season. The first half was all Spring Arbor. HC's half-hearted tackling allowed the Cougars to possess the ball much of the opening 45 minutes, but fortunately it led to just one SAU goal by the break. The Foresters picked up the intensity in the second half and evened out the play. Spring Arbor scored what would be the game-winner 17 minutes into the half on a long throw-in that found a Cougar wide open for a tap in. HC finally got on the board with 6:49 left on the clock on a David Callahan score, but couldn't come up with the equalizer before time expired. "As a team, our intensity was poor," said Coach Lawson. "We gave Spring Arbor little spirit, and they had an easy time of it out there." The loss drops the Foresters to 4-5 on the season and 0-2 in the MCC. HC Falls 4-3 in MCC Opener 9.25.04 - A questionable "no-call" and an own goal proved too much for the Foresters to overcome as the fell 4-3 in their MCC opener against the University of St. Francis. HC struck early when Joel Sanders sent a cross that found David Callahan at the far post for a header into the back of the net in the fourth minute of play. Four minutes later, the Cougars answered back to knot the score at one apiece, which is where the score remained for the rest of the half. The Foresters got things started again in the second half when Seth Caldwell played a nice ball to his brother Luke, who beat a defender and drilled it past the keeper. Midway through the half, Seth Caldwell was taken down outside the box, allowing Sanders to bend a free kick around the wall into the upper corner of the goal to give HC a 3-1 lead. St. Francis then capitalized on a questionable play when HC keeper, Jarrod Bennett dropped the ball after contact with a Cougar forward, who put away the goal. The Foresters then gifted the Cougars the equalizer as a poorly cleared header found its way over Bennett and into the net. St. Francis got the go-ahead goal in the 70th minute and held off the Foresters the rest of the way. "We took a little while to establish ourselves, but our possession was strong once we relaxed and played confidently," said Coach Lawson. "We created good scoring chances and finished beautifully. It's exciting to see us combining for creative passing and scoring opportunities. With the loss, the men fall to 4-4 on year and are 0-1 in conference play. HC Offense Dominates 9.16.04 - Although two starters were out of the lineup, HC's offense came up with more than enough firepower to put away the Manchester College Spartans 5-2. The Foresters struck first when Joel Sanders netted a goal off a pass from Luke Caldwell two minutes into the game, and 13 minutes later, Seth Caldwell set up Andrew Hulfish for HC's second goal. The momentum took a turn when the Spartans found the back of the net with a little over a minute left before halftime. In the second half, HC again got things rolling when Joel Sanders assisted Luke Caldwell four minutes into the half to give the Foresters a 3-1 lead. Manchester answered back five minutes later to again pull within one. Midway through the half in what could have been the turning point of the match, HC keeper, Courtney Hamilton, had to leave the match with an injury. The Spartans sensed an opportunity and went on the attack, but back-up keeper Jarrod Bennett came in and immediately solidified the defense. "At the time of Courtney's injury, Manchester was pressing us well, but Jarrod's calmness and acrobatic save midway through the half was a momentum killer," said Coach Lawson. Bennett's save ignited the Foresters and directly led to their fourth goal as Seth Caldwell put the ball and the game away. Sanders completed the scoring with his second goal of the game with five minutes left in the game. "Our guys rose to the occasion once again, and it was their determination that was the difference in this match." With the win, the Foresters improve to 4-3 on the season. Foresters Blank Hanover 9.14.04 - The Foresters controlled the tempo of the game from start to finish and blanked Hanover College 3-0. HC got some help on their first goal of the game. Forester keeper, Courtney Hamilton, punted the ball beyond the Panther defense creating a scramble for the ball as it entered the box. In an effort to clear the ball, the Hanover sweeper headed the ball toward his keeper, but it sailed over his head and into the net. The fluke goal was the only score of the half. Early in the second half, HC went down a man when David Callahan was issued a red card. The Foresters were able to re-grouped and scored a short-handed goal on a penalty kick from Luke Caldwell in the 59th minute. HC continued to possess the ball the majority of the half and added a third goal in the 70th minute on a Jarrod Bennett pass to Joel Sanders for the score. "It was a terrific team effort tonight," said Coach Lawson. "We faced adversity and still came away with a decisive result. It's a true testimony to the hearts of these men." For the game, the Foresters out-shot Hanover 8-3 and held a 6-2 advantage in corner kicks. The win brings the men even at 3-3 on the season. Franklin Frustrates HC 9.7.04 - Although the Foresters dominated possession and offensive chances throughout the match, it was Franklin College that came up with the 2-1 win. HC outshot the Grizzlies 19-10 and had a 10-4 advantage in corner kicks, but Franklin's keeper, TJ Davis, came up with 18 saves to hold off each Forester attack. "This was definitely a night that was frustrating," said Coach Lawson. Our result wasn't what we desired, but our offensive play was inspiring. Their keeper played a strong game and came up big time after time." Andrew Wust scored HC's lone goal in the 15th minute on a pass into the box by Andrew Hulfish to take a 1-0 lead, but the Grizzlies got the equalizer with 10 minutes left in the half. Franklin took the lead for good with their second goal in the 75th minute. With the loss, the men fall to 2-3 on the season. Foresters Rout Taylor-FW 9.4.04 - The Foresters left no doubt as to the outcome of the match scoring five of their 11 goals in the first 15 minutes of play against an out-matched Taylor University Fort Wayne squad. HC led 7-0 at the half and continued to dominate, adding four more goals in the second stanza. The Foresters out-shot the Falcons 25-2 and got goals from eight different players. Freshman Joel Sanders led HC with two goals and two assists. Matt Gerlach also had two goals and added an assist. "This was a valuable game for us," said Coach Lawson. "We were able to get our bench extended minutes while resting some of the starters." HC keepers Courtney Hamilton and Jarrod Bennett combined for the shutout. The win brings the men even at 2-2 on the season. Foresters Fall In OT 9.2.04 - In an evenly matched battle, it was the Indiana Tech Warriors that outlasted HC to get the 3-2 win in over-time. The Foresters drew first blood when David Callahan took a pass from both Seth and Luke Caldwell and put it in the back of the net midway through the first half. Indiana Tech tied it at one apiece 15 minutes into the second half and took the lead on a penalty kick in the 70th minute. Five minutes later, HC got the equalizer on a corner kick. Joel Sanders lofted it up and Luke Caldwell finished with a brilliant header to knot the score at 2-2. Neither team could get the game-winner in regulation, but 13 minutes into the first over-time period, the Warriors connected on a cross from the wing to grab the win. "The play was even most of the game," said Coach Lawson. "Except for a couple of second half breakdowns with our defense, I think the guys played well." Indiana Tech had 10 shots on goal to HC's nine and both keepers had seven saves. The Loss drops the men to 1-2 on the season. Foresters Split at Judson Tournament 8.27-8.28.04 - The Foresters opened their season at the Judson College Tournament on the weekend by facing the NAIA preseason 10th-ranked Mid-Continent College Cougars and fell 6-0. The Cougars immediately took control of the game scoring four goals in the first half. The Foresters did a better job of containing the Cougars in the second half, but still allowed two additional goals and could not find the back of the net themselves. "Their skill and technical ability dominated us today," said Coach Lawson. "We had a better showing in the second half once we committed ourselves to winning some of the physical challenges." In their second game of the tournament, the Foresters faced the Walsh University Cavaliers and came away with a thrilling 2-1 come-from-behind victory to earn the split on the weekend. Walsh got on the board first with an early goal, but went down a man when a player received a red card. HC took advantage and controlled the pace of the game, generating 14 shots on goal, but couldn’t finish. Freshman Joel Sanders finally broke through with a great run and delivered the equalizer with three minutes remaining in the match. Then, with five seconds left to play, Sanders delivered a pass behind the defense to David Callahan who netted the winning goal for the Foresters. “We played spirited from the whistle and it really helped us with our possession game,” said Coach Lawson. “Courtney Hamilton was outstanding in goal on the weekend.” With the split, the Foresters are 1-1 on the season.
