A young HU softball roster that includes
eleven freshmen and
sophomores headed to Tucson, Arizona for their spring break trip. The
youthful squad went 4-3 on the trip and then dropped a doubleheader to
St. Joseph's College at the end of the week to begin the season 4-5.
In their opening game,
the Foresters took down Trinity Christian College 12-4. HU
scored a pair of runs in the first and added six more in the second to
take control of the game. The two teams traded four runs over
the final three innings for the final eight-run margin. Lauren
Ward picked up her first win of the year with a complete game victory.
She allowed four runs on five hits and one walk while striking out
five. Laura Baas had two hits and four RBI to lead HU at the
plate.
Game two had an
identical score with the Foresters downing Morrisville College 12-4
this time. HU pounded out 18 hits and scored in all six innings
on their way to victory. Lauren Ward collected three hits
including two doubles and drove in three to spark the Forester
offense. Ashley Scally went the distance to pick up the win.
She gave up four runs on eight hits and she struck out five.
Against Hastings
College, HU made it three in a row with an 8-2 win over the Broncos.
After Hastings took a brief 1-0 lead in the top of the second, the
Foresters put eight runs on the board over the next five innings to
seal the win. Stacy Socha pitched six innings to earn the win.
She allowed two runs on nine hits and struck out four. Kendra
Stahl was 3-3 at the plate to lead HU.
The Foresters had
their winning streak end with a disappointing 2-1loss to the
University of Science and Arts. HU held a 1-0 edge for the first
three innings, but the Drovers tied it in the fourth and then scored
the game-winner in the top of the seventh. Ward (1-1) went the
distance in the loss, giving up two runs on seven hits and one walk
while striking out six. April Snider was the only Forester with
two hits in the game.
HU then took two on
the chin, falling 11-0 to NAIA top-ranked California Baptist
University and 13-0 to Waldorf College. The Foresters struggled
at the plate in both games managing just two hits in each contest.
Scally and Socha each took a loss to even their records at 1-1.
In the final game
in Tucson, HU bounced back with a 7-3 victory over Trinity Christian
College. The Foresters scored all they would need with four in
the second inning and then added one in the third, fifth and seventh
to put the game out of reach. Ward moved to 2-1 with the win.
She allowed three runs on seven hits and a base on balls and she
struck out one. Keri Badenhop led the Forester attack with a 3-4
performance at the plate that included her first homerun of the
season.
On Saturday, HU
dropped a pair of games to St. Joseph's College 4-0 and 8-3. In
the opener, the Foresters had six hits, but couldn't put any together
as they left seven runners on base. Ward (2-2) and Scally (1-2)
both pitched complete games in the losses.
