- The HU softball team traveled to the University of West Florida to
compete in a spring break tournament and came away with a 1-5 record
to start the season.
In their opening game,
the Foresters fell 9-4 to Drury University. The Panthers led 6-0
after three inning. The Foresters got on the board with two runs
in the fourth, but Drury got them both back in the fifth. HU cut
the deficit in half with two more runs in the sixth, but couldn't get
any closer. Lauren Ward took the loss for HU. She went the
distance and gave up nine runs, five earned, on 10 hits and five walks
while striking out three. Ashley McCann and Kendra Stahl both
had two hits to lead the Foresters at the plate.

In game two on
opening day, HU faced William Jewell College and lost 4-1. The
Cardinals plated one in the bottom of the first and the Foresters even
it up with one in the top of the fourth. William Jewell then
responded with two in their half of the fourth and added an insurance
run in the sixth to knock off HU. Brittney Bateman had three of
the Foresters five hits in the game and scored HU's lone run. Ashley
Scally threw all seven innings in the loss. She allowed four
runs on six hits and five walks and she struck out four.

On day two, the
Foresters picked up their first win of the season with a 2-1 victory
in the first game of a doubleheader with Mid-America Christian
University. The Evangels took a 1-0 lead in the second and held on to
it until the Foresters' final at-bat.
In the bottom of
the seventh, Keri Badenhop drillled a leadoff double to left.
With one out, Ashley Scally moved Badenhop to third on a infield
groundout. Janalee Boroff then came up with the clutch single to
center to score the tying run, but HU could not push the winning run
across.
When extra innings
are required, the offense starts the inning with a runner on second.
The Foresters were able to keep MACU from scoring in the top of the
eighth and then got their turn in the bottom half. With Megan
Smith on second, Kendra Stahl laid down a sacrifice bunt to move Smith
to third. With two outs, Laura Baas reached on an intentional walk.
Baas then stole second and Smith scored the game-winner from third on
the throw.
Ward evened her
record at 1-1 with the complete game win. She allowed one run on
four hits while striking out five. Brittany Gower was the lone
Forester with two hits in the game.

In the nightcap
cap, the Evangels earned the split with the 6-0 win over HU. The
Foresters managed just one hit in the loss. Laura Baas was the
pitcher of record for HU. She went four innings and gave up six
runs on five hits and eight walks while striking out one.

In their final two
games of the week, the Foresters faced Olivet Nazarene University and
were shut out in both games of the twinbill 4-0 and 9-0. Scally
(0-2) took the loss in game one allowing four runs on seven hits and
two walks while striking out four in seven innings. Ward dropped
to 1-2 with the loss in game two. She gave up nine runs on 12
hits and five walks while striking out one.
