Foresters' Season Comes to a Close
May 6, 2004

The #6 seeded Foresters upset the #3 seed, Taylor University Trojans, in the first round of the MCC Tournament, but then fell 4-1 to #2 Marian College and 3-2 in eight innings to #1 Bethel College to bring their season to a close.  In the tournament opener, HC immediately put one on the board in the bottom of the first.  Taylor committed an error with two outs,  allowing Holly Gibson to reach first base, which brought Liz Rapone to the plate.  Rapone belted a triple down the right field line to score Gibson.  The Foresters then added an insurance run in the third on a RBI double by Gibson.  Veronica Brown (6-14) and Julie Replogle teamed for the shutout.  Brown went four innings and gave up four hits with one walk and three strike outs.   Replogle took over in the fifth and also allowed just two hits with no walks and three strike outs in the final three innings.  HC then moved on to face #2 Marian College, but All-Conference pitcher, Brandi Thomas, was too much for the Foresters.  She allowed just three hits and struck out 17 for the game.  HC scored its only run of the game on a solo jack by Gibson in the first inning, her third of the season.  Brown (6-15) took the loss for the Foresters going three innings and giving up three runs, two earned, on four hits with two walks and five strike outs.  Now in the loser's bracket of the double elimination tournament, the Foresters took on the top-seeded Bethel College Pilots.  The two teams battled to a 2-2 tie at the end of regulation.  In the top of the eighth, the Pilots had a runner on first with one out.  HC second baseman, April Snider, fielded a sharply hit ground ball, attempted to tag the runner, and then threw the ball to first base for the double play.  So they thought.  HC began running off the field celebrating the double play, but the umpire ruled that Snider had not tagged the runner.  While the Foresters made a dash to grab the ball, the Bethel runner was able to make it home safely to give them a 3-2 lead.  HC got the next batter for the final out of the inning, then went to work trying to get the run back.  Rapone led off with a single, Replogle doubled and after a Gibson pop-up, Kaley Fode was intentionally walked to load the bases.  Snider then lined a shot that the Pilot shortstop snagged and easily doubled off Rapone at third to end the game and the Foresters' season.  Brown (6-16) pitched an outstanding game going all eight innings, allowing three runs, two earned, on five hits while striking out six.  The women concluded their season with a record of 13-24, which was more than twice as many wins as they had a year ago when they finished 6-28.

Spring Arbor Takes Two From Foresters
May 3, 2004

The Foresters concluded their regular season schedule by dropping a pair of games on the road to Spring Arbor University, losing 6-2, and 8-2.  In the opener, HC scored its only two runs in the top of the first on a two-run homerun by Kaley Fode.  The Cougars answered back with two in their half of the first and then broke the tie with a run in the fourth.  They added two more in the fifth and another in the sixth to complete the scoring.  Veronica Brown (5-14) gave up six runs, three earned, on 10 hits and no walks while striking out two in the loss.  In game two, Spring Arbor took command of the game with five runs in the bottom of the third.  Fode belted her second round-tripper of the day to get the Foresters on the board in the top of the fourth, but the Cougars responded with two more in the bottom half.  HC tried to get something going in the six, but managed just one run on a sacrifice by Liz Rapone.  Spring Arbor again had an answer with another run in their at-bat to finish the scoring.  Julie Replogle (7-8) went the distance in the loss.  She gave up eight runs, five earned, on 13 hits with no walks and one strike out.  The Foresters are 12-22 on the season and will now head into post-season play.  HC received the sixth seed for the MCC Tournament and will take on the third-seeded Taylor University Trojans on Thursday, May 6 at 12:00 p.m.  The double-elimination tournament is being hosted by Indiana Wesleyan University.

HC/Olivet Split Two Games
April 27, 2004

The Foresters and Olivet College split two games with HC winning game one 9-8 in eight innings and the Comets winning game two 8-0.  In the opener, HC jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the bottom of the first, but Olivet came back with four in the top of the third with the help of two Forester errors.  The Foresters quickly answered back with three in their half of the third on a three-run homerun by Veronica Brown, her first of the season.  HC added a seventh run in the fourth on a solo shot by Kaley Fode, her second round-tripper of the season.  Olivet got two back in the top of the fifth and tied it at 7-7 in the top of the seventh and then held off the Foresters in the bottom to send it to an extra inning.  The Comets immediately put on the pressure and took the lead with a run in the top of the eighth.  Kaley Fode got things started for HC in their half of the eighth with a one-out walk.  Julie Replogle singled to move Fode to second, who was then thrown out at third on a fielder's choice by Liz Rapone for the second out of the inning.  Melanie Zehr then drew a walk to load the bases for a hot-hitting Brown who laced a line drive off the fence to score two runs for the win.  Brown (5-13) picked up the win for HC, giving up eight runs, six earned, on 10 hits with four walks and six strikeouts.  She also helped herself at the plate with a team-high three hits and five RBI.  Game two was dominated by the Comets who jumped out in front 4-0 in the top of the first.  The Foresters managed just two hits in the game and never got on track at the plate.  Replogle (7-7) took the loss for HC.  She gave up eight runs, six earned, on 11 hits with no walks and one strike out.  With the split the women stand at 12-20 on the season.

Foresters 1-1 At Defiance
April 24, 2004

For the tenth time this season, the Foresters split a doubleheader, this time losing game one to Defiance College 5-1 and winning game two 1-0.  In the first game, HC connected for just four hits, left nine runners on base, and committed four errors that led to three unearned runs in the loss.  Veronica Brown (4-13) went the distance in the loss for the Foresters, giving up five runs, two earned, on eight hits and one walk.  Game two turned into a pitchers' dual with HC's Julie Replogle winning the battle.  Replogle (7-6) allowed five hits with one walk and three strike outs in the complete game shutout.  The Foresters scored the only run of the game in the second inning.  Emily Burkholder got on with a single, then moved to second when Kasey Harmon was hit by a pitch. Following an out by Melanie Zehr, April Snider came up with the biggest hit of the game, a single that scored Burkholder.  The split gives the women an 11-19 record on the season.

HC/Taylor Split Two
April 22, 2004

In their final MCC doubleheader of the season, the Foresters split the two games with Taylor University, losing the first 8-0 and winning the second 7-5.  In game one, Trojan pitcher Sarah Sarracino dominated HC's hitters allowing just one hit in the complete game shutout.  The Foresters also committed an unusual five errors in the game that led to four unearned Taylor runs.  Veronica Brown (4-12) went the distance in the loss for HC.  She gave up eight runs, four earned, on 10 hits with one walk and three strike outs.  In the nightcap with Sarracino back on the mound for the Trojans, the Forester bats finally started heating up.  Taylor scored first with two runs in the top of the second, but HC scored at least one run in its final four at-bats to hold on for the win.  The Foresters out-hit Taylor 12-10 in the game and were led by Holly Gibson's three hits, which included her second homerun of the season, and two RBI.  Julie Replogle evened her record at 6-6 on the season with the win.  She gave up five earned runs on 10 hits and one walk, while striking out two in seven innings of work.  With the split, the Foresters reached double digit wins for the season at 10-18 and concluded the MCC regular season at 6-8.

HC Gets First Sweep of Season
April 17, 2004

The Foresters notched their first doubleheader sweep of the season knocking off Goshen College 4-0 and 5-4.  In the opener, HC broke a scoreless tie with three runs in the bottom of fifth and added another in the six to complete the scoring.  Veronica Brown (4-11) pitched a gem for her first complete game shutout of the season.  She gave up just four hits and two walks and struck out five.  In the second game, Goshen grabbed a 2-0 lead in the top of the first, but the Foresters jumped back in front with three in the bottom of the second.  Both teams were stymied at the plate over the next four innings until Goshen broke the scoring drought to re-claim the lead with two runs in the top of the seventh.  In the bottom of the seventh, the Foresters were now down to their final out when Kasey Harmon got a single.  Chynna Wright, a pinch runner for Harmon, stole second. April Snider singled to advance Wright to third and then stole second.  Kala Parthemore had an RBI double that scored Wright to tie the game at 4-4, and then Kaley Fode hit a ground ball to the shortstop, who overthrew first base and allowed Snider to score the winning run.  Julie Replogle (5-6) went the distance in the win, giving up four runs on nine hits with a walk and four strike outs.  The sweep gives the women a 9-17 record overall and brings them to 5-7 in the MCC.

Foresters Split With Anderson
April 15, 2004

It was a tale of two games.  The Anderson University Ravens scored five runs in their final at-bat in the first game to pull out the 5-4 come-from behind victory.  In the second game, the Foresters returned the favor with three runs in their final two at-bats to steal the 7-4 win.  In the opener, HC had a 4-0 lead going into the bottom of the seventh when the wheels fell off.  The Foresters' usually solid defense faltered and gave up five unearned runs to let one slip through their fingers.  Veronica Brown took the loss for HC going six and a third innings and giving up five unearned runs on six hits and no walks while striking out two.  In the nightcap, Anderson had built a 4-1 lead heading into the seventh inning, when the Foresters turned the tables.  A bases-loaded double by Holly Gibson scored three runs to knot the score at 4-4.  Brown (3-11), who was on in relief of Julie Replogle, held the Ravens scoreless in their half of the seventh to send the game to an eighth inning.  This time it was a Kaley Fode double with the bases juiced that not only gave HC a 7-4 lead but also gave Brown some breathing room to close out Anderson for her third win of the season. The split gives the Foresters their seventh win of the season, which is one better than their total from a year ago, against 17 losses.

Bethel Sweeps HC
April 6, 2004

The MCC-leading Bethel College Pilots swept the Foresters in a doubleheader, winning 7-0 and 6-2 to remain undefeated at 11-0 in conference play.  In the opening game, Kaley Fode had HC's only two hits in the shutout.  Veronica Brown (2-10) went the distance in the loss.  She gave up seven runs, five earned, and struck out three.  In game two, six errors cost the Foresters as only two of Bethel's six runs were earned.  Julie Replogle (4-6) pitched four innings in the loss. With the two losses, the women fall to 6-16 on the season and 3-7 in the MCC.

Another Split For Foresters
April 3, 2004

The Foresters split a doubleheader with their third consecutive opponent this time falling 6-0 and winning 3-0 at Grace College.  In game one, neither team could put anything together at the plate until the Lancers finally broke the stalemate with six runs in the bottom of the fifth with some help from two HC errors.  The Foresters managed just four hits in the shutout.  Veronica Brown fell to 2-9 on the season in the loss.  She gave up all six runs, two earned on seven hits and one walk.  In game two, HC took a 2-0 lead in the top of the second, which proved to be all that Julie Replogle would need to pick up her fourth win and second shutout of the season.  The Foresters added an insurance run in the fifth to complete the scoring.  The meat of HC's lineup did the bulk of the damage against the Lancers' pitching with Kaley Fode, Holly Gibson, and Liz Rapone each collecting two hits in the game, including a double by Fode and a triple by Rapone.  The win gives the women a record of 6-14 overall, matching their total number of wins from a year ago, and a 3-5 record in the MCC, which also equals their wins in conference play last season.

HC Go 1-1 at Marian
April 1, 2004

After being no-hit in a 2-0 loss in game one, the Foresters responded with a 4-1 win over the Marian College Knights in the nightcap.  The Knights' pitching held HC's batters in check through 12 straight innings of play, until the Foresters finally broke through with four runs in the top of the sixth inning of game two.  HC used several hits with a few walks and an error mixed in to put together their winning rally.  Julie Replogle went the distance for the Foresters to improve her record to 3-5 on the season.  Veronica Brown (2-8) took the loss for HC in the opening game.  The women now stand at 5-13 on the season and are 2-4 in the MCC.

Foresters Split a Pair at IWU
March 25, 2004

The Foresters capitalized on some timely hitting to earn a split in their doubleheader with Indiana Wesleyan University, losing game one 2-0 and winning game two 3-0.  In the opener, the Wildcats took advantage of two costly HC errors in the first inning to score the only two runs of the game.  Wesleyan pitcher Hillary Meals pitched a one-hitter in the shutout.  Veronica Brown (1-7) went the distance for the Foresters, giving up two runs, zero earned, on four hits and one walk. In the nightcap, Julie Replogle and Brown teamed for the five-hit shutout over the Wildcats with Brown (2-7) picking up the win.  HC's Emily Burkholder had an RBI double in the fifth to break the scoreless tie and the Foresters added two insurance runs in the sixth compliments of two Wildcat errors.  The win snaps the Foresters' seven-game losing streak and gives them a 4-12 record overall with a 1-3 conference record.

Foresters Fall in Doubleheader
March 23, 2004

The Foresters were swept by the University of St. Francis Cougars 4-3 and 2-0 in their first Mid-Central Conference action of the season.  In game one, Kaley Fode's solo homerun in the bottom of the sixth brought HC within one run of the Cougars, but the rally fell short handing the Foresters their sixth one-run loss of their young season.  HC struggled at the plate throughout much of the game striking out 11 times in the seven innings.  Liz Rapone was a bright spot in the lineup with her two hits and two RBI in the game. Julie Replogle (2-5) went 2 1/3 innings in the loss for HC giving up four runs, two earned, on five hits while striking out three.  In game two, the Foresters plated two runs in the fourth to tie the score at 2-2, but couldn't come up with timely hits as they left six runners stranded over the final three innings.  The Cougars added a solo homerun in the fifth and sixth to put the game out of reach HC.  Emily Burkholder and Replogle each had two hits in the game.  Veronica Brown (1-6) went the distance in the loss giving up four runs on eight hits while striking out four.  With the two losses, the women fall to 3-11 on the season and 0-2 in the MCC.

HC Loses Fourth Straight
March 19, 2004

The Forester's offense sputtered in their final to games of the trip south as they were shut out 3-0 by Belhaven College and fell 7-1 to Grand View College.  Against Belhaven, HC out-hit the Blazers 10-7, but could not push any runners across.  Veronica Brown (1-5) pitched a complete game in the loss giving up three runs, two earned, on seven hits and one walk. In game two, Grand View's pitching nearly silenced the Forester bats with Holly Gibson claiming the only two hits in the game.  Julie Replogle (2-4) went 6 2/3 innings to take the loss for HC.  She gave up seven runs, five earned, on 10 hits and one walk.  The two losses make it four straight for the women and drop them to 3-9 on the season.

The Foresters dropped two one-run games on the day, losing 5-4 to Ohio Dominican College and 2-1 to Mac Murray College in spring break action in Florida.  In the first game, HC owned a 4-2 lead after five innings, but gave up three runs in the bottom of the sixth and failed to score in the seventh.  Holly Gibson led HC with two hits, including a homerun, and two runs batted in.  Veronica Brown (1-4), who took over on the mound in the fifth for the Foresters, was the pitcher of record.   In their second game of the day, HC scored on an RBI double by Emily Burkholder to take a 1-0 lead in the second, but Mac Murray even it at 1-1 in their half of the fourth and then got the game-winner in the bottom of the sixth.  Gibson and Kaley Fode each had two hits to lead the Foresters.  Julie Replogle (2-3) went the distance for HC, giving up two earned runs on just four hits and one walk, while striking out four.  The two losses drop the women to 3-7 on the season.

HC 1-1 With Oakland City
March 16, 2004

The Foresters split a pair of games against Oakland City University, losing the first 1-0 in eight innings and winning the second 4-3.  In the opening game, HC's Julie Replogle, who had a perfect no-hitter in tact after seven innings of play, didn't get any help from her offense.  In extra innings, both teams start their at-bat with a runner on second.  The Foresters failed to score in the top of the eighth, but the Lady Oaks used their only hit of the game, a bunt single, and an untimely Forester error to score the winning run in their half of the eighth.  HC left seven on base to just one for Oakland City, but could never capitalize.  Replogle (2-2) took the complete-game loss, giving up one unearned run on one hit, no walks and three strike outs.  In game two of the doubleheader, it was HC that came up with the late inning rally to steal the win.  Heading into their final at-bat, the Foresters trailed the Lady Oaks 3-2.  Kala Parthemore led off the inning with a single.  Chynna Wright followed with a walk.  Melanie Zehr moved both of them up with a sacrifice bunt.  Holly Gibson singled to score Parthemore.  Kaley Fode received an intentional walk to load the bases.  April Snider hit into a fielder's choice that forced out Wright at the plate.  With two outs and bases loaded, Liz Rapone delivered the game winning shot that plated Gibson.  Veronica Brown (1-3) picked up her first win of the season, going the distance for HC.  She allowed three runs, two earned, on 12 hits and struck out three.  Brown also helped her own cause going 3 for 3 at the plate and scoring a run.  Gibson also had three hits in the game, scored a run and knocked in one.  With the split, the women move to 3-5 on the season.

Foresters Split First Two in Florida
March 15, 2004

HC's Julie Replogle (2-1) pitched a complete-game shutout over the University of Ozarks (AR) to lead the Foresters to the 5-0 win in the first game of the doubleheader.  The Eagles returned the favor in game two defeating HC 7-0.  In the opening game, the Foresters plated three runs in the bottom of the fourth and added two more in the fifth to put the game out of reach.  Holly Gibson continued to swing a hot bat going 3 for 3 at the plate and scoring two runs.  Kaley Fode had two hits and also scored 2 runs for HC.  April Snider and Liz Rapone both knocked in a game-high two runs.  Replogle gave up seven hits and struck out four to pick up her second win of the season.  In the nightcap, the Foresters couldn't string enough hits together to produce any runs and committed six errors which led to five unearned Eagle runs.  Veronica Brown (0-3) went the distance in the loss giving up 14 hits and striking out three.  The Foresters move to 2-4 on the season.

DePauw Edges HC In Twin Bill
March 13, 2004

The DePauw University Tigers edged the Foresters 3-2 in both games of the twin bill.  In an errorless game one, the two teams traded runs in the first and fifth innings, but HC could not answer in the top of the seventh after the Tigers took a 3-2 lead in the bottom of the sixth.  Leadoff hitter Renae Schortgen had two singles and scored both of HC's runs.  Liz Rapone also added two hits.  Holly Gibson and April Snider each had an extra base hit in the game with Gibson recording a run-scoring triple and Snider adding a double.  Julie Replogle (1-1) went the distance in the loss for HC giving up three runs on ten hits and no walks and striking out six.  In the second game, the Foresters were one out away from earning a split, but committed a costly error to give the game away.  HC took a 2-0 lead in the third on runs-scoring hits by Gibson and Kaley Fode while Foresters hurler Veronica Brown (0-2) kept the Tigers at bay with six solid innings of work.  In the bottom of the seventh, DePauw strung together enough hits and took advantage of the only Forester miscue on the day to steal the 3-2 victory.  Gibson went 3 for 3 at the plate to lead HC.  With the two losses, the Foresters fall to 1-3 on the season.

Foresters Get Split at Manchester
March 10, 2004

The Foresters hosted Manchester College in their home opener and came away with a split, losing 5-2 and winning 4-3.  In the opener, HC held a 2-1 lead after five innings of play, but the Spartans pushed four across in the top half of the sixth and held the Foresters scoreless in their final two at bats to get the come-from-behind win.  Kaley Fode's two-run double in the third accounted for all of the Foresters' scoring in the game. Veronica Brown took the loss for HC, giving up five runs, two earned, on ten hits and four walks while striking out five.  In the nightcap, both teams scored two runs in the first inning and added another in the third.  The difference in the game was a two-out Fode single in the bottom of the seventh that scored Holly Gibson for the game-winner.  Gibson and Fode each had three hits in the game including a triple for each and both scored two runs.  Liz Rapone went 2 for 3 at the plate and knocked in two for HC.  Forester freshman Julie Replogle, who picked up her first career win, helped her with an RBI-single in the game.  Replogle went the distance for the HC, giving up three runs on six hits and two base-on-balls while striking out four.  With the split, the women are 1-1 on the season.

Foresters Open Season At Ancilla College
