Six Foresters head to Nationals

5/24 - On May 15th, Huntington College held its commencement ceremonies, marking the end of another school year for most of its students, but for six Forester track and field athletes, one final test remains.  These six individuals will head to Louisville, Ky., to compete in the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) Outdoor Track and Field National Championships to be held May 27-29, 2004.

Jonathan Doyle, David St. Louis, Brittany Fillman, Courtney Gullickson, Nicole Jacob and Brooke Welch all met qualifying times set by the NAIA in their respective races during the outdoor season.

Jonathan Doyle, a senior exercise science major from Boardman, Ohio (Boardman High School), is making his fourth appearance in national competition.  He qualified in two events, the 110 meter high hurdles with a time of 14.96 seconds coming at the Mid-Central Conference (MCC) Championships on April 30, and the 400 meter hurdles with a time of 54.90 seconds also set at the MCC meet.  Doyle, who is seeded 24th in the 110 high hurdles and 29th in the 400 hurdles, will run both prelims on Thursday at 3:15 p.m., and 5:45 p.m., respectively. Semi-finals for the high hurdles will take place on Friday at 1:00 p.m., followed by the finals at 4:35 p.m.  The 400 hurdle semi-finals are scheduled for 5:25 p.m., on Friday, with the finals set for 4:10 p.m., on Saturday.

David St. Louis, a sophomore mathematics education major from Dewitt, Mich. (Owosso High School), qualified in the 3000 meter steeplechase with a time of 9:40.21 at the MCC Championships on April 30.  St. Louis, who is seeded 26th, will run in the trials on Thursday at 8:15 p.m. Finals are set for Saturday at 2:20 p.m. This marks St. Louis’ debut to the national scene.

The four women, freshman Brittany Fillman (Markle, Ind./Norwell), sophomore Courtney Gullickson (Overland Park, Kan./Blue Valley Northwest), senior Nicole Jacob (Van Wert, Ohio/Van Wert), and senior Brooke Welch (Berne, Ind./South Adams) qualified in the women’s 3200 meter relay with a time of 9:40.19, also set at the MCC Championships on April 30.  This is the second opportunity for Jacob and Welch to compete in a national track and field event, while Gullickson and Fillman are making their inaugural appearance.  The team enters the national competition as the 16th seed and will run in the prelims on Thursday at 7:00 p.m.  Finals are set for Friday at 6:20 p.m.

The Forester track and field teams are coached by Tom King. For more information on the track program, visit www.huntington.edu/athletics/track.
